Food to avoid

What foods do others find trigger pancreatic pain?

DH finds the worst food to be camembert/brie as it sets off severe pain within about 10 minute

Hot chips are no good and yet he is able to eat doner kebab and icecream without ill effect.

So it's not as simple as avoiding fats or dairy!

My pain has been triggered by a dinner of steak and broccoli,  fried chicken and a tuna sandwich. But, I've eaten the same with no ill effect.  I have also had prime rib with horseradish sauce with no problem.  I'm beginning to believe it kicks in whenever it wants, regardless of what I have eaten.

Yes yes that is exactly what I'm talking about...there isn't anything consistant in what he can or can't eat except for the camembert/brie that always does it.

My acute pancreatitis was diagnosed by x-ray, blood work (lipase above 393.  It was 1440) an ultrasound within 3 hours.  That includes wait time to get information from the tests.  I don't understand why y'all say it's difficult to diagnose. According to my blood work (liver) my pancreatitis was caused by gallstones.

He had ultrasounds and full blood tests and everything came back within the normal range. Ultrasound looked at pancreas, spleen, liver, gallbladder, kidneys and all clear!

Since learnt that lipase and amylase can be within normal range for both chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

They didn't test for cancer markers though so we need to still look into this further and maybe get an MRI.

He drinks apple juice with apple cider vinegar and swedish bitters to help prevent and/or dissolve gallstones not that any showed in the ultrasound, but hands have turned yellow before without explanation.

Genna makes it all sound very simple. Yes it can be easy to diagnose Acute pancreatitis if it's caused by gallstones but what if it's not gallstones that are the problem?

There can be a number of causes of pancreas issues and it can take many tests.

It might be acute attacks but it could be acute attacks of chronic pancreatitis.

yes agreed and it does sound more like acute attacks of chronic but we still worry about cancer as well...the pain is isolated to his back only (constant) and only when there is an acute attack does it cause other symptoms like nausea, severe pain, yellow hands etc

I can see where gallstones make for an easy diagnosis, but not so easy if the gallbladder is clear

pain is normally isolated. get him checked for sphincter odi. I am in pain all the time but you learn to manage it. I am awaiting a response from the Health Secretary as to lack of researc and on costs to the government

Alcohol is the number 1 cause.  Next is gall stones.  None of my tests showed gall stones.  The doctors were stumped by the cause.  Every test was negative for stones.  My gall bladder was normal looking.  But, based on my CT, X-rays and bloodwork, a diagnosis was made.  When I went in for an after hospital checkup, my general practitioner immediately said that I had passed a gall stone.  He based that on my metabilic paneIs. There was a spike in my 1st liver enzymes the day of the onset of the pain.  LOL, pain isn't a strong enough word for what I felt. Apparently, stone(s) caused the AP but didn't show up anywere because it had already passed. The doctor I saw at the Pancreatic Center at the University of California, San Francisco told me you can have gall stones that do not show in any tests.  Stones can be almost microscopic sized gravel. I lived in constant, sometimes debilitating, pain from 7/2 until the first week of October.  I had 2 hospital stays from the pain.  I woke up one day and the pain had completely stopped!  I do not  know why, but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth.  It scared me!  Why?  Do I have cancer now?  (no).  Since then I have had maybe a total of a week in pain.

He needs to discus with his GP the possibility of seeing a pancreas specialist if his problems persist.

I would suggest that that he stops taking home recipes for gallstones, they could make his problems worse, especially as he hasn't got gallstones.

there is more than just gallstones.  mine is idiopathic which means despite test no gallstone or fat or anything else was found before during and after.

things like sphincter odi and othwr conditions which can cause the pains.

in September last year I had full bloods done and told apart feo. a slight liver anomaly I was fine despite the odd random bouts of pain. The on  boxing day I had a full blown attack that nearly killed me. And because the enzymes travel around in the blood they can cause damage to other organs. I have been left with damage to my left lower lung. and most of the doctors etc who you tell about enzymes doing the damage really dont know about it. my gp practice has been learning of me and my condition as I am the first ever patient they have had.

My advice would be stick to a low fat diet and see it that improves the pain and if no gallstones are found. But if you really want to push your luck then keep eating the stuff that is going to lead to a full blown attack. Harsh but true if I could have prevented this I would as living in pain is not what I want
