Foods and exercise that Fight Osteoporosis

Can anyone provide me some Food tips and exercise that can fight Osteoporosis.

    Hello Bonexcin, an alkaline diet is supposed to be beneficial for bones. Coffee is bad for bones as it leaches out calcium. So are fizzy drinks and sugary foods. Obviously dairy is good for bones as it contains calcium, but anyone with cholesterol problems will not be having too much dairy! I myself walk 2 miles every day, and if one can dothe occasional jog, that's fine. But jogging is not suitable for those who have advanced osteoporosis. Hope this helps, there's loads more, but the national osteoporosis society will probably have more on their website.

    I think that what Donnatella says about weight bearing excercises makes total sence. I went off all medication for osteoporosis and for cancer prevention, deciding to do it my way. I go on a strenuous 1/2hr walk every morning carrying a backpack weighing 10lbs. Then I also bounce on a rebounder now and then that is also beneficial. And of course as Stefania says, a good diet is essential. I can't wait for the next checkup !

    Hello Stefania and Ulla,

    Thanks for your suggestions and help, i really appreciate. As Stefania said that coffee, fizzy food and sugar foods are bad for bones, so in future i will definitely avoid these foods. Ulla you were also suffering from same problem, how did you get over form osteoporosis, kindly share your experience with us.

    Also red meats can leach calcium from bones. Taking Vitamine D with Calcium and Magnesium as supplements should also help.

    As far as exercises go... EXERCISE IS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!!

    I firmly believe this to be true. The best way to strenghthen bones is to use them in a weight bearing way. Walking, light jogging, or hiking are the best weight bearing exercises. Adding some weight to a back pack is brilliant!! Also yoga and pilates are both great for your core strength but also these are great weight bearing exercises to strengthen bone.

      Just read your post......my problem is I have osteoarthritis as wellfrown

      That is a definite NO NO {jogging/hiking} Thats my problem >>>I've just been diagnosed with OP but finding that the things I'm supposed to do to help are the opposite to the things I need to do for OAbiggrin

      At the present moment I can barely walk buyt hopefully this is acute. I had a hip replacement, and4  weeks into recovery I was doind an NHS exercise and there was a CRAAAACCCKKK.....I was taken ionto hospital where they discovered I had fractured my Greater Trochanter Bone!!!!! Thats when the OP was diagnosed.  I was told there was nothing they could do about it, it would heal itself but would take a long time......6 month on and I'm still on 2 crutches except in the houseeek I wonder what they think a long time isquestion So I couldnt think of jogging at the minute LOL

      I'm just trying to figure out what I can and cant do

    Another thought... My GP took a blood sample and amongst other things found that there was no lack of calcium (I am vegetarian and almost vegan, just some cheese and occasional egg) so the calcium thing had bothered me. My diet is just fine but he thought it might be a thyroid problem that the bones don't absorb the calcium - hence I do rebounding to improve this rather than medication.

    I have been reading and found K2 is important as well as the usual calcium, vitamin D. Magnesium can be included in the calcium tablets and that is supposed to be important too. K2 is in cheese, natural yoghurt, and other things as well if you google K2 you will,get a list or you could take a supplement.
