Hi Shirley - best advice is to avoid ALL processed foods completely.  Whatever else you decide to eat give a miss to things like processed meats (ham, bacon, sausages, etc), processed cheese, white bread, packet cakes, instant or pre-prepared meals, takeaways, etc., in other words just stick to foods in their natural state and cook them yourself.  Stick with olive oil or butter - no margarines or processed spreads - no matter how much their publicity says they are healthy for you.  Try to buy free range meat and use fresh fruit and veg (frozen is perfectly okay as frozen veg actually contains more nutrients as it has usually been frozen on the day of harvest whereas some 'fresh' produce has been sitting around losing its vitamin content on supermarket shelves for weeks on end).  Dont avoid fat in your diet just make sure its not processed fat or trans fat - butter isnt as evil as the makers of so called healthy spreads would have us believe and olive oil is just wonderful for you.  Do avoid refined sugars and try to swap to unrefined demarara for example.  Leafy veg is really really good for gut bacteria and will help hugely with weight loss.  Try to avoid sliced wrapped bread - even the wholemeal.  It's been made using what's called the "Chorleywood process" - a factory process that is rapid and uses low protein wheat - the proving is artificially speeded up and the total turnround from raw ingredient to finished product is like two hours - it's seriously not healthy stuff.  Try to find a local bakers who makes their own bread or buy 'artisan' bread which you can find in better supermarkets.  It may be more expensive but you'll find yourself eating a lot less and feeling fuller.  Kaz gave good advice about eating things as treats in moderation - don't deny yourself your favourites foods just eat them only as a treat and you'll find you'll actually enjoy them more.  Even a burger for example can be 'healthy' if the meat is lean, include lots of salad items and avoid eating it in a cheap nasty white bread bun.

Simple bottom line - if it looks and taste like junk, it is and it will make you feel unhealthy. smile

    Hi Shirley

Have to agree with Loxie. I cut out gluten and refined sugars. I cook everything from scratch. I use the slow cooker regularly and freeze any left overs for those days when I am not up to spending time in the kitchen.  It works for me and since on this regime have generally been and felt better for it.  Not saying I do not have the odd treat because I do but it is only the odd treat.  Everything in moderation!   Give it a go and let us know how you get on.
