Foods for calcium

Posted , 5 users are following.

I was so excited to learn about making pesto sauce with kale.  Now with PMR and Osteoporosis diagnosis I'm learning to eat kale, and perhaps even enjoying it (ha, ha the spell correct typed "annoyed" instead of enjoy, funny). It's still kind of confusing to get enough calcium in us and learning how to increase our chances of bones healing and bursa, and tendons, .... Muscles, ...

Also trying to make the bone broths that are supposed to help our muscles.

I wanted to share the kale pesto recipe and hear what things y'all know about cooking or using kale and other foods.

I wanted to post here instead of alternative, because I think many of us want foods to help us. Hope that's okay.

Oh, almost forgot the recipe.

kale pesto

2 cups kale, 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds, 1/4-1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt, blend up in food processor.  I put it in some turkey meatballs and added some chicken broth. Yum. One can add other spices too.

I was shocked how good it was.

However, I read kale is only 9% daily value of calcium. Not sure what that really means.

There's a fantastic kale salad recipe on the internet.  Google kale tomatoes feta mint.

Looks very good thanks! I didn't think about mint, and that musterd sounds good, in the recipe I looked at. Now that my stomach is better I bet I can introduce musterd again.

i also read about kale being tough which I dislike, it said to actually massage, or squeeze the kale in your hands...ha, it really works! wink

    Hi Layne,

Thank you for sharing, that recipe looks yum!! smile

?I presume 9% of the rda in calcium?  I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong lol

?And yes, you're right, it is so hard to get the right foods into us.  I started eating lots of cashew nuts which I love......until I read that they can make OA worse, or aggravate it sad  I'd wondered why my joints were hurting more...I'd been sitting in the evening with a bowl of cashews thinking I was being healthy and helping my bones!!  So all a question of balance with our other complaints/illnesses huh smile

?Will defo try your recipe smile

    ?kind regards Carrie

Yeah, hear ya Carrie. I was eating almonds by the handfuls, and saw nuts vs seeds can cause issue, so I excited to see this recipe using pumpkin seeds.

But you know...I read olive oil can bother some people, so I'm beginning to think if one eats a particular food way too much then perhaps it can cause problems.  Doing the elimination thing is so hard.

      Hi Layne,

      ?Always something huh....

?I'm beginning to think that we just try, if it disagrees with us, we move on, if it doesn't we stick, and just try and balance stuff out as best we can lol  You are so right re the elimination thing....and even trying to remember ...I now have a list of what I've tried and disagreed with me lol

Good luck with things your end smile

      ?kind regards Carrie
