Foot Drop Bimalleolar Ankle Break

I broke my right ankle on May 26, 2017. I have a bimalleolar fracture involving the tibia and fibia bones. After the swelling in my ankle subsided I had surgery two weeks later on June 09. I now have two plates, one attached to my inner ankle and one to my outer ankle with 5 screws each. The screws are longer on one side but none of the screws enter other bones. I have been non-weight bearing for 4 wks. I also have foot drop (prior to ankle fracture), have no feeling in my foot and I must wear an AFO as I can not lift my foot. Can anyone give me information about having the two conditions. The surgeon said the foot drop should not effect the ankle until I get into rehabilitation. Also I am concerned about the hardware rubbing against my brace.

I have two plates like yours too, but your injury sounds more serious than mine. (How did you break your right ankle?). If you can buy a knee roller to help you get around, I'd get one. At least it'll make you mobile and get you off the couch. As someone advised me, patience, rest, lots of ice and keep that foot elevated. Do everything your Doctor and eventually PT tells you what to do. My PT told me that it'll take a year before my body will adapt to the metal in my foot. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply mary 48140. I tripped/slipped off of a sharp one foot drop/incline in my yard while moving a boulder/rock and was wearing a brace for my foot drop which I think twisted my ankle even more. Dumb move. I also have a hip replacement on the same leg and the Doctor said I had soft bones (opposite of osteoporosis, soft and bendable vs dry and brittle) but my other leg is fine and I was physically active before the fracture break. I am using a wheelchair and get around pretty well in it. I am concerned how in the future the hardware will alter my walking and wearing a brace. I will take your advice. Thanks for the good thoughts and good luck to you to.
