It is very difficult to know how to reply to your situation when we dont know the facts. You must have consulted with your GP as well as orthopaedic consultants. Is it within your foot, is it ankle? I should have a replacement ankle but at 73 Im not going to, but you may be much younger so perhaps its a good idea.

If you are not sure go back to GP and talk with him/her. It is your decision after all.

Find out about others who have had that op.

    I hope all ends well.

Thank you so much for replying, i am almost 72, ive just had 2 hip replacements. i had an operation on a hole/cyst in my talaus bone in 1982 . I now have end of stage arthuritus in this area and have pain in my foot which as continued to get worse during the years. I exercise 5 days a week and want to carry on doing so. My consultant, who i see again in 2 weeks time is obviously waiting a decision, i just want tohear from others who have had this operation and how they are afterwards.

apologies i dont know what a foot fusion is

Foot fusion is an operation to fuse the small bones in the foot usually because of arthritis. Sometimes this may also be applicable to the ankle although replacement is now a consideration.

Arthritis is nearly always the cause for the need however there are other causes.

      Hope that covers it.

Recovery is often long and can be painful though the outcome may offset the period of discomfort.

I'm so sorry you have that condition, it seems to be developing in my hands too.

There are many devices to assist with everyday needs such ad you mentioned. Also there are pain clinics that may help you cope if like me you dont like taking pain killers.

Search online if you're able and you will find lots of help as well as help groups that have a wealth of useful information. Dont be caught up in the increasing use of lotions and potions, most of our pain IS in the mind, its just difficult to know how to manage it.

I hope this has been if some help.

      Dave.

Most of my pain tends to be early in the mornings when the weather is cold

I'm 65 and have severe OA in my ankle and forefoot which causes much pain and instability however the advice I received from my Ortho is obviously meant for me alone and may not suit others but may provide a non-surgical option . If I was to fuse my ankle then it was likely that the way I walk (gait) would change putting new pressures on the mid-foot are. This then could cause additional pain and a worsening of the OA leading to another possible fusion down the track. I chose not to operate going instead to see a Podiatrist who recommended a stiff shoe insert inside my orthotic shoes stopping my foot from bending this reducing the pain in walking. I am in the process of getting new shoes designed for greater foot support and stability.

    Good luck with your decision
