Foot pain and reducing pred

Posted , 6 users are following.

On 25th Dec I reduced the pred from 7/8 mg alternative days to 7 every day, with a view to reducing to  6/7, but I had foot swelling and pain so I left it at 7 every day.  I have been to the podiatrist whom has said I have a bunion which has dislocated my toe next to the big toe, very painful ( ouch ).

Today I thought I would try to cut down to the 6/7 every other day, but would like your advice before doing so please, I am still in pain and my foot swells after being on them even though I am wearing the insoles the podiatrist gave me.

Hmmm - I think it may need more than insoles to deal with a bunion that has dislocated a toe. Would your GP send you to a foot surgeon for assessment?

Thanks Eileen, the doctor Sent me to the podiatrist, I wanted to know your advice on lowering my pred please, or if you think I should stay at 7 untill my foot swelling has gone, which could be an awful long time?

I had both bunions operated on plus my second toe pinned. This happened long before I was diagnosed with PMR  so I doubt whether these are connected. I do sympathise as all very painful but now my feet are straighter , although some shoes are still a problem.

    thinking of you.

    Tricia.

thanks Trica, I think I'll probably end up having it operated on.

at the moment th podiatrist doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks, but I don't think I can cope with another 6 weeks seeing as up to yet the insoles are doing nothing.

i didn't think it was anything to do with the PMR, I just wated advice on wether or not to lower the pred whilst all this is going on.

No it's parted from my 3rd toe and crosses over my big toe.  Wasn't really aware that my small bunion was that bad, I wondered if it developing inwards rather than outwards hence the dislocated toe.

It's a hard prescription to do but requires thorough investigation of motion through all planes and tendon function

there's some form of subluxation going on I suspect rear foot to fore foot pathology but without seeing 'insoles' can't tell you but they shouldn't hurt and deg shouldn't concentrate on rear foot motion

do you or have you anything else odd ie extra warranty on a shoestring knee thigh pain low back neck or arm

this isn't related to pmr but because of pmr you are hypersensitive

      take meds for pmr

Thank you Gillian, not to far from me I'm in north east derbyshire. I'm now going to the podiatrist again on 20th of this month, it is hospital based so hopefully they can refer me to the right department.

Thanks, sorry I didn't reply to your first post it was above my comprehension, I now know why, doesn't take much to confuse me especially when in pain lol.

      Hi Gillian,

i haven't had any X-rays done she checked me whilst lying on my tummy and the foot dangling down so I'm presuming she could feel it.

    Hi there,

I would suggest you continue on with your prednisone regime as the PMR is not related to the bunion or the dislocation. You have 2 different medical issues which need to be treated individually. You could perhaps take some added pain relief as well such as panadol which may help.I would also recommend you return to the podiatrist and tell him that his inner sole treatment is not helping but making things worse. If the Podiatrist does not help go back to your GP and ask to be referred on to a foot surgeon as suggested by Eileen. Let us know how things go. Take Care. Kassie

Sounds like good advice to me, I'll get in touch for an earlier appointment if possible, I know it's normally a long wait ,thank you Kassie

I've no doubt it is his usual practice - but with a severe bunion I would have thought the FIRST visit should be to a foot surgeon to make an assessment on whether it is something that could be dealt with conservatively or whether it needs his tender attentions. a podiatrist is always going to mess about with insoles even when the bunion is too advanced. I had very poor experiences with a hospital podiatrist who offered insoles that were no use for the problem. I did get a totally different sort of insoles a few years later from another podiatrist after I was referred to someone who got the problem right - not my foot as such but my ankles!

It is two different problems as Kassie says - is the stress of the pain aggravating the PMR? If it is, then you need to stay where you are.

Hi the bunion doesn't look to bad at all I was shocked when she told me my toe was dislocated and would go back, I just thought it was the swelling making it misaligned.   I've telephoned this morning and managed to get a new appointment in  2 weeks time instead if the 6weeks with a view to looking at having it operated and putting the paperwork in motion.

I'm dreading going into work this weekend and my husband is serverly disabled so not an ideal situation really.

at first the PMR symtoms were there but they seem to have subsided, but I did wonder if by staying on 7mg it would perhaps keep some of the foot swelling at bay. I took naproxen at first for my foot but it didn't do anything I was eager to come of that too as I was heeding your warnings against taking this with the pred. Thanks again

angelcake, I've just received the following message from the forum moderator following my plea for an edit facility so that we can correct if something like a simple spelling error, for instance, has changed the gist of what we were trying to say in our posts:

"Re editing - if you aren't aware there is an idea posted on the feedback site here:

      http://patient.uservoice.com/forums/141505-general-feedback/suggestions/706180-editing-our-own-comments-in-discussion-forums

where you can add votes. The more votes the idea gets the more likely it is the work will be done".

So the more votes we all place, the more likely we are to get this useful facility.

      Hello Mrs O

That link didn't work for me, I've found the 'edit' on other forums to be a tremendous help.

I can't always get my full text up.on here either do if I try to edit before Sending I can't

Yes, despite using the little arrowed bit at the bottom right corner I still can only see a bit of my posts - and pity help anyone with motor problems trying to click and drag on it!

"They" claim it is complicated - so how come other forums manage it I ask? This forum has become very user-unfriendly - only the moderator is the friendly face!
