Foot smell after bunion surgery

Hi

I had bunion surgery 3 and a half weeks ago. Everything went well, it has 3 screws and a pin in it. The stitches came out after 2 weeks and I was allowed to wash my foot for the first time  a few days afterwards. So since day 19 I have been able to wet / wash my foot.

However, it has a peculair smell..it is NOT an infected type smell.( there's minimal swelling and no redness ...some heat associated with the swelling). I was the foot at least twice daily...especially considering that the outside air temp is 43 degrees C.... and keep a light thin gauze 'sock' on it whilst it is in the DARCO shoe...

My daughter says the smell is dead skin cells.... but I'm not sure.

Anyone have similar experience?

cheers..and happy bunion free days !

bev

Hello. I had union surgery in April and wow was it a long process as my bone would not fuse it did not start fusing unit 'll week 8 I was in the book for 13 weeks. But anyway. Your foot looks very sore and know am not sure what the redness is from as far as the smell are you wearing a boot ? I noticed an odor SI I would wash the liner of my boot as much as I could. Good luck hope the rest of your recovery goes well.

      Hi!!!

I wear a davro post surgical shoe...as pictured here...no boot. I wash the shoe.

Anyway! long story short, the foot is going well.... redness going as is the bruising .

I took the foot to a doctor (GP) who said that all is good, no infection but that the skin smell is like a bacteria on the skin. He recomended  washing it with a betadine wash.

I did and it has taken away the smell!

Hope all is well with you!

    Hi Bev,

My first bunion surgery I had back  3/2014.  I also had a smell to my foot. It wasn't an infected smell   My foot would sweat everytime I put a sock and shoe on it. The Dr. wanted me to walk on it in my cast, 2 weeks after surgery.  Which hurt terribly and I felt was too soon. The non surgical foot would be dry but if I had walked somewhere or used my foot, the bunionectomy one would be wet with sweat,  The smell wasn't a stinky foot smell at all.  It was more of a medical smell.  The foot also would swell.  This went on for a year afterwards.  Then, finally stopped.  I did not have any physical Therapy for the foot. So I think if maybe I had, it might have  helped it from the swelling and the sweating.

I had to have surgery done again in October 2015, for the same foot.  A different Dr. also went in and redid the Bunionectomy/Osteotomy among some other things that resulted of a first bad Bunionectomy surgery.  This time my foot does not have the medical sweating smell but I also have been having physical therapy.  Which excersizes and moves it into a sweat.  I wasn't aloud to bear weight on it, wash it or anything till 9 weeks after my surgery. I still am in a negative heel shoe till the end of January, at my next Dr.s appt.  I think this Dr. knows what he's doing and people come from other countries to have him do surgery.  So I really hope    this is my last surgery!

I hope this helps... Wishing you a Happy New Year,

    Dee

thanks!! I wish you well....not washing the foot for that long would be hard!! I do not have a cast, just the surgical shoe.

I took the foot to a doctor (GP) who said that all is good, no infection but that the skin smell is like a bacteria on the skin. He recomended  washing it with a betadine wash.

I did and it has taken away the smell!

      take care!

      Bev,

I should have explained more about the washing of the foot.  I didn't have a cast either.  What I meant by washing it,  I just couldn't emerse it in water in the bath or shower, for infection purpose. I would take some medicated wipes and clean it several times a day.

    Hi Bev,

This is just a speculation but your photos show that the operation disinfectant (the pink stuff) is still there. I had my bunion operation two weeks ago, and also have that pink "paint" on my feet. It does not come off easily. Maybe this substance, or the products of its reaction with the skin, is causing the smell? The other possibility is the streaks of dried blood that are visible in your later photo. BTW the photos are a bit misleading because they are taken in different light, and the later one is darker. I guess this is just the difference in illumination, surely your foot is not darker than it was a week ago? You mention that there is only little swelling and no redness.

As for the weather... Are you in Australia? This sounds like a typical heat wave in Adelaide or Melbourne. I'm in Canberra, it is a bit milder here due to higher altitude.

      Hi

yes the paint stuff took a while to go... the foot is darker most probably beacuse of the bruising ....which became black under the foot!

yes I am in australia..perth in fact and it has been HOT!

      Cheers for now
