Hello,

I have been clean from heroin for past 7months and was wondering...for all people out there who are clean... What do you do to keep yourself clean? How do you stay clean?

Activities? Meetings? People?

i have tried AA and various self help groups over the years i have had long periods of been clean and sober but it wasnt until i started to work with a personal terapist and started to deal with all the baggage i had accumulated over 25 years of active addiction that my lifr began to change- this  is what worked for me - everybody must find thier own solution- very few make it without help

while AA and NA seems to be a great help for many people, i could never get it- i got a sponsor and did the steps but i really couldnt figure how this was going to keep me clean- maybe i am too stupid, who knows , but it did nothing for me - i also had a serious issue with thier ethos, their insistance that it was their way or none, almost religous like in there zeal, not for me. i was advised to see a counselor 3 years ago by my my GP and it really worked for me- it was very hard work at times - i had to deal with alot of stuff i had been carrying around for years- but for me it worked- i recently became addicted to pain medication after back surgery but thankfully i got clean again and i am back working with my counsellor - we all have to find what works for us ourselves unfortunately there is no prescribed route to sobriety - its a selfish disease addiction - to thy self be true-

Hi there , well done for getting clean . That's some feat after 22 years so never forget what an amazing acheivement that is. I too planned to start the gym after quitting ( 15 yrs ) but struggled to find the motivation ! Cannot be doing with support groups , they just never worked for me ! Now I just take a day at a time and try and do something every day ( doesn't have to be spectacular - even if its just doing your nails , going for a walk or getting a book out the libary just as long as you're trying to do something each day for yourself it doesn't have to be big. I thought I would die of boredom to start with and that my life would never feel exciting or comfortable again but I've learn't not to take this as a total negative ( I thought I'd get clean and then everything would be hunky dorey but life's not quite like that ! Just don't forget how far you've come and congratulate yourself for that and take each day as it comes. A little bit of motivation each day will start to build up ( motivation/exercise multiples as you go - you just need to start smaller ! )I'd beware the binge drinking coz you feel better at the time but alcohol can act as a depressant afterwards leading to more lethargy and a vicious cycle .If you think of any tips too , give me a shout thanks
