For Americans, how much did your Hemorrhoidectomy cost out of pocket and what year was it done?

For Americans, how much did this cost you? I have really crappy insurance, and I'm not sure if I would be willing to spend more than $5,000 to have this surgery done. Someone wrote on here before that her father paid $20,000 out of pocket for her to have the surgery!!! That is simply to much for me!
I already tried the banding 3 times (it didn't work it's been 3 months since my last banding). I really want these things gone because they pop out every bowel movement and the bleeding has become regular again (and I'm not straining 95% of the time since I've been on Metamucil/drinking plenty of water).
Just thinking about the potential price makes me anxious, thinking I'll just have to deal with this for the rest of my life. I just can't justify spending 20 grand to fix these things as it's more of a nuisance at this point, rather than a life or death type of deal.
So:
- How much did it cost for other Americans OUT OF POCKET?
- How good was your health insurance, or how much of the surgery did your health insurance cover?
- What year did you have this done at the price you're listing?
- If it was really expensive (like $20,000 out of pocket), were you able to set up some kind of payment plan where you could pay it off in 10 years, similar to student loans or something similar?

Hey thanks Valerie - What is medsave? I just looked it up and went to what looked like their official website? But I'm still not sure what it is - So this is extra insurance that you get aside from your work insurance? Do you have to at least be on the plan for a year or other certain time period? How much does it cost per month?
$3800 sounds very reasonable. I'm assuming this was a good surgeon you went to as well? I only ask because I suppose with health, just like in most other things in life, you get what you pay for?

I cant see you having an insurance company that dont cover a quality of life procedure... 1st see what they will pay and if it's not thiesable, look into having it done in another country, I know that seems far fetched but there are alot of countries that perform surgeries pennies on the dollar compared to the U.S.

I have a very high deductible at $6500 for the year, it is with Blue Cross Blue Shield. I could very well see them saying that this procedure isn't "necessary" and forcing me to pay out of pocket, lumping in a Hemorrhoidectomy with things such as Lasik Eye Surgery or Cosmetic Surgery, or something like that.
Because the thing is, as of now at least, I won't die from it. Yes the bleeding has come back after I had my 3 banding sessions done, but it's not massive amounts of blood. And the hemorrhoid almost always goes back in on its own, only rarely do I kind of have to squeeze my butt cheeks together to get it to "pop back in place" or "go back in", so to speak (sorry I know that's nasty).
So for now, yes I could live with it. I just don't want too. But I suppose you're right, it would probably be best to call the insurance company and see how much they would cover, and then shop around my state. Maybe it would depend on if the doctor says it's necessary or not or if I should try other steps first before the surgery.
It's stressful even thinking about all of this. Hopefully others will chime in on how much it cost them when they had it.

Your saying that for now that you can live with it but believe me they get alot worst to the point that you'll do anything to get rid of them, I waited 20years to actually have the operation the pain from the roids and fissures was unbearable that I would have paid a million to get rid of them..I couldnt believe that they could cause so much pain, broken nose, wrists, toes even broke my shin was nothing compared to that constant pain in the ass, only thing I can compare the pain too is a bad infection in tooth/mouth, those are murder.. You should call insurance and see what your dealing with financially.. My only regrets not doing 20 years ago..
b.t.w. What state do you live? I'll try to do some research for ya...
