Forgotten cement?

Hi there,

I have been told that the doctors have only used cement in the femoral cavity. Has this happened to anyone else? I am in agony and desperate for clarity, please help! :-)

Some hips (like mine) are uncemented and the bone builds up and clings to it after a few weeks/months/ .They take a bit longer to get better but there is far less chance of them loosening after a few years. Hope this helps.

I don't know why you are in agony though so you need to see a doctor as soon as you can.

Thanks for reply, Shirley. The reason I'm in so much pain after 10 weeks is, I am told, because I have been walking with only one or no crutches and putting weight on my hip. apparently uncemented hips should not have weight on until they've had time to heal. My doctor didnt tell me this and cannot explain my pain. When did you start to put weight on the operated hip?

I have uncemented and was told to weight bear from the beginning. Used 2 crutches for 2 weeks, by 10 weeks only occasionally using a stick. At post op check at 7 weeks they were happy with me using a stick only.

has you had an X-ray to check the positioning

Like Maggie, I was told to put full weight on it from the start.

At 5 weeks, I am using one stick just to provide a small amount of support indoors as without it I limp badly still, and I don't want to 'learn' that bad habit.

Outdoors I still take 2 sticks, one to walk with, and one as personal protection against all the people who cannot see me because I am so small (well over 6 ft, and 17 stone - 1.9m, 108kg !!!).

I was two weeks non weight bearing and coyld only put my toe to the floor with operated leg. (Because I had to have a bone graft which is a long story)

Then six weeks partial weight bearing.

Now at 11 weeks post op I am walking around the house without a stick but use it when I go outside. Uncemented is slower to heal at first but there is no chance of the cement loosening later on cos there isn't any.

I'm uncemented and have been full weight-bearing from the moment I was conscious again. That is what stimulates bone growth to secure the new hip for life!

    Hi Lindy,

There are two types of replacement, cemented and uncemented, their use depends on consultant, age, weight and other medical conditions.

the cemented are Put in with a special substance that holds the prosthesis in.

uncemented have a slightly porous prosthesis which enables the bone to grow into it and round it over the weeks months and years.

either produce good results and should not result in agony.

how far post op are you?

you do need to phone GP or hospital ward where you were for advice

I have an uncommented replacement. I was concerned because I have osteoporosis but my surgeon says it's so that future revisions are easier.

Was yours left uncommented intentionally or did they say they forgot? It must be a worry for you.

      Hi Jodi-France

My pain is mostly between hip and knee, bt sometimes in the groin too.

It's mostly sore when I put weight on it. So lying down is almost painless
