Fosamax

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have just been prescribed Alendronate 70mg (Fosamax) for osteoporsis.  I have some bone loss, but not significant.  I think the reason prescribed was because of the steroids.  Are others taking this?  Any pros or negatives?  I try to limit my pill take as much as I can.

Thanks.

    Hi Mary,

The only problem with fosamax  that I've discovered is if you have a tooth out it can cause lots of trouble.  Other than that it's fine!

There are problems with Fosomax if you take it over a long period, I've read.

Unfortunately I don't recall what the problems were because by then I had already stopped taking it. I took it for three years and then stopped.

I discovered recently that is causes problems with swallowing.  My GP has put me on Ibandronic Acid, which is the same but you take it once a month and not once a week.

I am still having swallowing porblems so I haven't taken this month's tablet.  Apart from that, no problems

Thanks, I haven't started taking it yet & am wondering if the injection every 6 months might be a better option.  I'm not a great pill taker or swallower already.  smile

I think it might be.  My GP said we would try the monthly one, then if I was no better, he would offer me the 6 monthly - he called it an infusion.

Thanks, my rheumy said it was a shot & I have also heard it was an infusion.  The pharmacist said the generic fosamex takes at least 3 to 6 months to work.  Another negative.
