Four year on. Ouch

well its four years since my full right hip replacement, four years of increasing pain.

x-rays show replacement is fine, so the surgeon gives in and send me for a MARS scan. results hip replacement is perfect.

The scan shows i have a mass of something on my thigh muscle, that is causing the pain and stopping me from lifting my leg. walking up stairs, getting into bed, getting into cars. anything where you need your leg to lift its self. is hard to do and very painful. even sneezing or coughing is painful to the hip area.

My surgeon is referring me to a different hospital that deals with lump bump & cancers.

well that is a shock.anyone had anything like this. I'm keeping calm, but worried.

Hello, I have had 3 surgeries on my left hip. After my TLHR I had constant pain and pressure. Finally after a year of complaining I had an MRI it showed a mass on my pelvic bone. I had to see an oncologist and have it removed . I understand how you feel. I still am having trouble with my hip. I hope you have better luck than I have...

Hi Dawn, I have exactly the same symptoms as yourself from my first hip replacement 3 years ago, also had bone scans, MRI and last week another CT scan, all previous results came back positive so I'm hoping I get some luck out of my latest CT scan results.

I did ask my consultant what he actually thinks what the problem may be, he thinks the hip stem is either to short or out of line.

All the symptoms you have mentioned all ring true, difficulty getting up stairs, dressing myself I.e underwear, socks, shoes, rolling on my side in bed, got to get in my car backside first, I even changed my car to automatic because of the clutch, I am having to sell my motorbike because of the gear shift.

I've had everything under the sun medication wise from pain management, I'm now on morphine.

I will keep you posted when I get my results from CT scan, I'm just hoping something shows up so that they can sort it out as 3 years in pain is no fun.

    Hope this has helped.

thank you Graham, i hope you find out what causing your pain. the mass showing on my MARS scan is laying across the muscle that does all the lifting of the leg. just praying its not the big C. hoping for a fatty lump that can be removed. good luck to you. Dawn

Hi again Dawn, I googled Mars and it tells me it's a coloured 3d image, more clear than the old B&W images, I think I will mention this to my consultant if the CT scan comes back negative .

I hope and pray that you and myself are not thinking of the worse scenario.

ill keep posting any news back to you if you would do the same for me.

So sorry to hear that Dawn. I'm 3 1/2 years post THR and still have pain though it is manageable. My scans all show replacement is fine but Consultant says I have deep scar tissue around the outside of hip. He thinks an Op to try and clear it could help but other surgeons are not so sure it will fix the issue. So I have left it as don't think I can risk it in case it's no difference or even worse. Hope you get yours sorted out soon. Nick

    Hi Dawn,

Just read your post and wanted to wish you well with your referral to the other hospital. I will keep my fingers crossed for you, but am sure you will be fine.

I had my left hip replaced 4 years ago come this November and am still in a lot of pain, more so than before I had the surgery, so your post made me think a lot. I too struggle lifting my left leg, going up steps, getting into the car, all so really painful, but have always put it down to the fact that I am disabled and have Spina Bifida so knew that it would always take me longer to recover, just didn't think I would still be in so much pain 4 years after my op. I should maybe speak to my GP as I have been discharged from outpatient care at the hospital and haven't had an x-ray in ages.

I know it is easy for me to say, but try not to worry. Please let us know how you get on. I haven't been on this forum that long, but try to look on it when I can. Hope you don't mind me answering your post.

      Hi Dawn,

Sorry for the slow reply as not been on here for a couple of weeks. I hope you are doing well and fingers crossed for everything to be fine with you. Thanks for good advice. My pain seems to be getting worse these days so I'm going to make an appointment with my GP to see about re-referral to a Consultant. Best Wishes, Aileen x
