Fracture 5th metatarsal in right foot

Posted , 4 users are following.

8 days ago I fracture my 5th metatarsal (mid shaft) in my right foot.

I was having pain there 2 weeks before and all of a sudden it broke.

I was in a plaster case for a week with nwb.Today I have moved on to a walking

Boot, and told to start to wb. I have and it really hurts. I'm going to start

Walking more and more each day in it (with crutches) I'm 33

I'm trying to eat really healthy with lots of milk, nuts, natural yogurt, fruit, and protein.

Anything else I can do

Thanks Tim

seems fast to WB but you are young! I am old (67) but, same story. Foot hurt for a few weeks before. Are you going to ortho doc or podiatrist? Every protacal is different. I had surgery and was 4 weeks nwb then, in walking boot another 4. See doc tomorrow but, feels fine, a bit of swelling. Am over it. bring horse back on Fri. Keep us informed.

Orthopaedic doc, Ive just done my first walk with the boot on this morning with crutches.

Walked around my front drive for 15 minutes, putting about 20% weight on my foot.

It hurts but feels comfortable doing it, now back on the sofa with foot raised :-)

Going to walk 4/5 times a day on it

Hi Tim, Did you have surgery ? I broke my 4th and 5th . I had surgery. I was told surgery cut the healing time all most in half. Which it did as far as nwb went. I didn't do well with the boot. FYI it took me a very a very long time to heal. Aleive helped a lot oppose to pain pills and elevate the foot.

I Didn't have surgery as the fracture was not displaced, the boot is hard work,

      Are you fully healed now?

OMG I thought I was never going to walk again!! This happened in February , it took me about 5 months to finally walk. And I was going to physical therapy 3 days a week. I lost all muscle in my left leg. Along with the pain I really struggled to walk with out using a walker or cane. It still goes numb but not any pain. But doesn't feel like a normal foot. A lot of metal in my foot from surgery. I'm just glad I can walk !!

So no surgery for you, and your putting weight on it with a boot. Geez be careful. Being it is healing on its own . I wasn't able to put some weight on it with a boot for about 6 weeks after surgery. And it just didn't feel normal in the boot . Plus I had a lot of pain. And gaining extra weight from sitting around watching tv didn't help matters. I hated every minute of this foot fiasco. 😁🙀😡

It is a bear!! I had surgery 8 weeks ago. 4 NWB then 4 in a walking shoe. No pain ever but break was non displaced. Was so happy to walk in that stupid shoe. Went to my ortho yesterday who said to walk in my hiking boots for the barn and:or Brooks tennis shoes. Also said I could ride my horse!! So excited. So, for me it went fast except I totally wasted 4 weeks before surgery to see if it would heal. Bad idea!! My doctor is a foot and ankle specialist who said surgery time frame is 8 weeks start to finish and it has been. I hope you start to heal faster!!

      Broke 5th metatarsal 19/09/2016

Plaster case for 1 week, took off 27/09/16

      walking boot of 5 weeks

      First week with boot

I have been walking 3/4 times a day (with crutches )

Started with 10% wb on Tuesday

      Now on 80% today (monday)

Can also put foot on floor flat when sitting on the sofa very carefully,

To do so small floor exercises .

A long way to go but I can see a lot of positives,

That's good! Be careful, after all this you don't want to end up with surgery. Can I ask what you did that caused this?

I am a gardener that mows 40 lawns a week and 3 days of

Other gardening work and I was playing football twice a week too,

So I must have had a stress fracture a few weeks before and it just broke

When I was running at football :-(

Oh geez! Nothing good about being laid up unable to walk normal. I feel terrible for anyone that this happens to.

After 3 weeks from having the fracture I can now walk with no

Crutches with the boot on and have walked 1 mile today. I also

can walk around the house Bear foot, but I am trying not to do

    to much of this.

Going to leave it one more week and then try and walk in my work

    boot,

I am getting little to no pain, I just hope it is healing

    Cheers Tim

That is great. I too, am actually back to my normal activities riding my horse, barn chores and working out. . Surgery was the answer for me and took exactly 8 weeks start to finish. I did waste 4 weeks before waiting to see if it would heal.
