Fracture or sprained finger 2 different diagnosises

I went to urgent the next morning after falling forward on my stairs and injuring my finger the night before. The swelling was by the knuckle and upward on my ring finger, There was   bruising on the back of the finger. The injury was at the top knuckle. I had difficulty straightening it and they had to cut my ring of to xray it. There was no bruising below the joint.

They took 3 xrays at urgent care and sent me to the orth.

The first report says non displaced volar plate fracture involving proximal middle phalanx left ring finger.

When I went to the orth they said it wasn't broken after looking at the xrays.

3 images LEFT hand show soft tissue swelling involving proximal ring finger. Benign

punctate calcifications project over proximal ring finger within the soft tissues. There is

no LEFT hand fracture.

How likely is it to have a fracture reversed on an xray.

They put me in a dorsal stablizer, instead of a splint,

I am wondering since I am on leave of absence since I can't use it to full capacity. I have a insurance policy for fractures that will pay out while I can't work. If it is a sprain there is no financial help.

I see them in a week for reevaluation of the healing. knuckle is still swollen but bruising is going away.

Hi Winddecor! I think sprains are just as painful and do take time to heal. It is strange that someone looking at X-ray results could make a mistake about whether or not there is a fracture! Anyhow it isn't right that the insurance people won't cover a sprain. Getting a third doctor involved might clear the mystery, but that means more expense for you to accrue. Anyhow, I hope you heal quickly and get insurance coverage.

Ice it a lot while you are waiting for the re-evaluation.  GOOD LUCK

You have 2 different opinions.  Urgent care and Ortho.  Ortho is the "specialist".  Question them when you see them in a week.
