Fractured Femur after hip replacement

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi just came back from the OS,from my 1st post Op visit. They did x-rays and saw that the top of the femur appears to be fractured.there is a black line where it is fractures. It is well approximated and he is going to check it in 2 weeks.Has anybody else heard of something like this occurring? He said everything was so tight in there that the prosthesis just put to much pressure on the bone.I was 3 weeks out at the time and really feeling pretty darn good

How odd!  You don't have any pain?  Did you feel anything when it broke?  I'm glad you're feeling so well!  Best wishes!!

Not at the time, but it did hurt more by the time I went to bed and by the next morning I was miserable. My pain level was similar to what it was before and right after surgery. There was no snapping or popping sound so initially I thought I just pulled something, but when it did not respond to cold, elevation and pain medication as I thought it should I began to worry.I always joke that it's hard being 4 11 in a 5 5 world but it's true.Literally things don't quit fit.The OS said it was really a tight fit and the fx is right at the edge of the prosthesis so that hard surface just popped off the top of my bone.I was honestly at a pain level of 9-10,now at 7 so it is improving. It got worse before it started to get better.Today is literally 1 week since it occurred .Thank you for your concern.Appreciate you.

Thank you Linda.Today has truthfully been a very discouraging day.I have just wanted to cry.I waited over a year until I could get my knee done. Then I had to wait another year to get my hips done. Plan get 1 in May and 1 in August.I don't mind bumping it back to Sept or Oct at latest just because I want to be done with it.Tomorrow is a new day.I will not give up.Thank you for your kindness

      Hiya,

My surgeon told me straight away after the op, he reassured me that it will cause no problem and will heal and he was true to his word, it honestly didn't hinder my recovery, I'm 11.5 weeks post op, back at the gym, swimming and back at work, slowly getting back to normal, still have pain but I think I do too much and this is why, have nonever of the arthritis pain just achey pain .. hope this helps xxx

You bet it does.I have been very discouraged today.Just that feeling of coarse something else is going to happen.I found out about my left hip being bad when my knee did not appear to be healing as expected after a total knee replacement. My husband had a heart attack and a triple by-pass while I was rehabbing so of coarse I could not keep all my appts.I made it to 1 of 2 for the 2 weeks he was in the hospital.I have been worried about him this time also .its kind of nerve racking. When they told me about the fracture ,I knew there was something wrong so was not surprised.Hearing that you are doing so well is very encouraging.Thank yousmile

I have heard of this, my surgeon told me that my femur is so small that they will have to find a suitable stem and he 'promised' not to put too much pressure on the bone as if there is the femur can crack, I havent had my surgery yet but this is one of the many things I am nervous about! Usually it does heal itself, just means your recovery may be a week or so longer than the suggested time to let it heal.

You said you couldnt tell it was fractured? Sounds like your body is reacting really well to the surgery. Munch on lots of bone healing foods and you'll do great smile x

I just watched a show on bone density this weekend on bone density and healing.Just got Calcium with Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K as they encourage the exorption of calcium into the bones.Really eating a lot of high Vitamin C foods as well.Trying that thing of food being medicine

I am a firm believer that food can be a magical healing aid. Taking suppliments as well can really boost it too, not just for bone healing but to help the overall feeling of recovery and energy. Get munching on as much fruit as you can smile

Im in the Uk. I also take Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets, it is said to help strengthen bone joints and cartilage. No definitive proof it works but my doctors have said that from experience patients seem to respond really well to them. No harm in taking them, and hey if its a placebo then im all for it smile

Hi I had a fracture discovered during my thr. It was repaired with titanium wire. Unfortunately, my precautions still involve only 50 percent weight bearing past 6 weeks post op. Fractures take a while to heal..      Has your Dr. Told you to stay off of the leg? What did he suggest? Best of luck. Cindy

When did they discover it?Yes he did.He told me to stop PT.I called there to cancel the appts and the PT said to rest as I only have 3 weeks before returning to work.He said this was a time to allow the body to heal and to rest as much as possible .He said to stay off it.He talked about having to secure the bone piece with titanium wire and I don't want that.I also want to have my right hip done .I had planned to do it at the end of August but might have u push that back a little bit but that one is really bad also.
