Fractured Greater Trochanter Bone? Anyone ever heard of this?

Hi, I havent been on the forums for a long time because I'm in such pain. After my 2nd THR {4 weeks post op to be exact} I was doing an NHS exercise when there was a crack and my leg gave way. The long and the short of it........Emergency consultant I saw said it would heal but would take a long time.......About a couple of months later I saw the consultant that has done both THR's and he said it would never heal. I would be on 2 crutches or possibly one for the rest of my life.

OK 20 months later I'm still on crutches but the main problem is that the pain has got so much worse. I'm in agony with it especially the first 3 hours or so in the morning. I've got other conditions but can cope with the pain from those....this!!! cant find anything to ease it.

I'm normally a person who is glass half full......but recently I've been very "down"  I'm seeing the consultant again on Friday 2nd October....cant come quick enough. Anyone any ideas/ suggestions/or questions for the consultant. I get on well with him but this time I'm going to have to really lay it on thick if that makes sense.

All replies will be appreciated

Eileen, I was reading your post but for some reason thinking it was "another  Eileen"...I'm so so sorry to hear that this has happened to you!!!

I thought you were on the road to recovery (as much as any of us can be),and

for this to happen to you, I'm just MAD...you are so uplifting to so many on this forum....I want to have a tantrum and say "its just not fair"

Please know that I'm thinking of you, and you being you, will demand as much action and help that you need to cope with this set back.

      Hi Patricia

I used to be on the Hip replacement forum and for a long time I was the only Eileen then another Eileen came along and a few people got us mixed up. 20 months ago I had my THR!!!!

I was 4 weeks on the road to recovery and that was it  cheesygrin

Well I see the consultant on Fri again and I get on well with him but dont want a fight. But going to have to be a bit more firm and if I feel like crying I will. That can help sometimes. If only I had been firmer earlier I might have had more chance but 20 months on??? Not so sure

Thanks for all the lovely thoughts.

      Love

You say you were doing an NHS exercise. Where were you? At home or a clinic when it happened? If you were at a clinic you may have a legal route to pursue. That could get people to pay attention and help you manage this life destroying pain better.

      Hi Kikeena

I was at home. Where are you? In the UK they dont keep you very long wink  I was in one day, had my op, had one day in hospital after that and then out the next day.

The physio came round showed me a couple of exercises and made sure I could cope with the stairs and that was it!!!! No physio after that, just a book and instructions to do these for 6 weeks.

It is a good thing that you can get along with your consutant and can be honest with him...he is only human ...- is there someone coming with you to the consultation?

can you go for a second, third opinion ?

take care sweetheart and let us know how you are getting on

    big warm hug

I  would opt for a second opinion. A fresh set of eyes and a fresh set of options is always best in this case. One Drs input could be totally different than the others. Its your body your future health. Why not take a chance to see if there is an agreement between the professionals than to regret never taking a chance to see if there was a better way. Your future health is at stake. If its the same diagnosis then there is peace of mind of knowing that you dont have to look months or years and say I should have . Your paying the Dr anyways so why settle your mind.I hate the I should of's I have done this many times.

Also Eileen not every Dr studied at the same school as you well know. Different views of opinion always give you a full evaluation.

      Hi

Are you in the UK?  Its not as easy under the NHS to get a second opinion

I did mention it at the beginning and was told well you've hada second opinion.   The first one whebn I was taken into hospital for a day when it happened and the 2nd one ...the consultant that  I normally see

So not sure where I go from here.

Hi, I believe in the power of prayer as well

      Thank you.

When you are googling if you see anything {particularly UK} that gives a remedy for it please let me know and I can suggest this on Friday.

The exact wording in once of his letters to the GP was Avulsion Greater Trochanter 4 weeks post op

Thats it along with a list of diagnosis  LOL but I can cope with them

One thing that I have found helpful in dealing with pain is hypnosis.  I started using hypnosis CD's when I was experiencing insomnia and didn't want to take more medications than I was already taking.  To my surprise, it worked about 95% of the time!  After that I began acquiring more hypnosis CD's.  One of them was for pain.  It definitely helps.  There are people who are able to have dental work or even major surgery without anesthesia - only hypnosis.  I'm a lousy hynoptic subject but I find it still helps me.  I found a reputable psychologist who uses hypnosis in his practice and who has put out a number of CD's on various subjects.  I found the CD's on Amazon.  There are lots of different people putting out hypnosis CD's, so be cautious as to which one you choose if you decided to try it.  A tip:  the less hard I try, even the less attention I pay to what he's saying, the better it seems to work.  Good luck!

      Hi Linda

Thanks for that. I'm willing to try anything

I dont sleep well because of the pain so I try relaxation tapes before settling down but never tried hypnosis.

My worse time is the minute I wake up ....absolute agony so not sure when I would use it then?

      I'll research into thanks again

    My dearest Eileen,

I'm so sorry to hear you are still no further forward with this. I had hoped that you were on the road to recovery after we last spoke and you said you had been told that you would recover, although it would take time. 6 months down the line I had hoped that you would be feeling much better. I could scream for you!!

You were such a help to me after I had my first hip done 6 months ago and I, amongst others, were very grateful for your wisdom and experience in helping us get through our own surgery, even though you were struggling so much yourself. This just isn't fair!! 😡

Where is your consultant based again?

I sincerely hope you get some help.

Take care and sending lots of healing vibes.

      Hi Ali

No ...no further forward.  You are right ....when I was taken in that day it was an emergency consultant who sent me for an X Ray and gave me the diagnosis buthe said that it would heal but would take a long long time.

A few months later when I saw the consultant/surgeon that did the THR's and its him I usually saw he said it wouldnt heal?????

I'm glad I was a help to you

I'm in Northumberland in North East England so its the hospital there.

Hopefully he will have some advice on Friday when I see him

      Thanks for the healing vibes

      Love
