Fractured hip dynamic hip screw surgery

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi everyone I'm 32 years old and I fractured my hip exactly 1 month ago... I got operated on 3 weeks ago and had a dynamic hip screw put in.. Any tips on what I should be doing to get back to Normal? I find it hard to sleep as sleeping on my back is uncomfortable if anyone can give me advice on it.. Also will i bee able to walk normal again and how long will it take to get back walking normally.. On my second week after the op I just started walking without crutches but when I went for my doctors appointment the doctor n physio told me not to walk on it for another month only partial weight bearing.. But when I had my op I was told to start walking n I was allowed to put full weight on it.. but now after my check up appointment they told me not to put full weight on it incase the dynamic hip screw pushes up.. So the doctors said everything looks perfect just not to put full weight for another month on it any advice would be appreciated.

    hi declan ,

warm welcome to the hippies forum ...

I am sorry but cannot really give  an answer to your questions ... did the surgeon not give you more advice in addition to partial weight bearing for another month?

are you seeing a physical therapist on a regular base?

You might have to use crutches until you can put full weight on your hip ...

Please let us know how you are getting on ... All is well, declan ...

    take care

    big warm hug

    renee

    Hi Declan,

I am 32 and had a hip replacement 3 months ago.  As the surgery is  different I can't comment on what you should/shouldn't do re weight bearing, all I would say is that i have found my progress fluctuates and I have somedays with no pain or stiffness and others when I need to use one arm crutch as putting weight through is painful.  Mainly the advice has been that this is normal and use my intution about how much weight to bear.  It is hard when so many professionals are giving advice but listen to what makes most sense to you and to your body.

Also I found it hard to realise that recovery is not necessarily a straight inclining line (frustratingly).  I have started to accept that set backs come as regularly as progress.  Keep thinking positively.

Regarding sleeping on your back - i found pillows under my knees helped (and still help - I still don't feel comfortable on my operated side) but I was advised you can sleep on side after 6 weeks.

I fractured my hip when I was about your age in 1973. I did 3 months in traction then three months non-weight bearing and 3 months partial. Rather frustrating at the time. However the hip healed OK and I didn't have any problems for 30 years, during which I ran, cycled and rode horses and did quite a lot of physical work. So my advice is to follow the doctors and get it completely healed. Hopefully you'll be 70 before it starts to wear out and they will no doubt have much better replacements by then.

    happy New year
