Fractured my ankle 3 months ago but ankle keeps swelling and is painful.

I had fractured my ankle in July this year. Had it in plaster for six weeks, had a review with consultant yesterday. Had another x ray and consultant confirmed the bone had healed, but I explained to him that I my ankle keeps swelling and is painful. Can't walk very far and he said it could be the soft tissue area may have fragments of cartilage init, but because I have a pacemaker can't have a MRI scan. He has told me to come back in 3 months time.I have to have psyiotherapy . what do i do if it keeps on swelling.I don't have much faith in the consultantbreally

Hi all hi all fractured my ankle 22nd December I am now 13 weeks post op broke all 3 bones  and dislocated itnow with plate 7 screws. So glad I found this site as not much online to read.

I was in a cast up to week 8 I can walk but have a limp and by the end of the day I'm in pain and foot swollen just wondered if anyone knows how long the pain goes on for?

Thanks in in advace I feel all your pain

Sounds similar to my injury. 3 breaks and dislocation and plates and screws.  I broke mine on Dec. 9th. I still have some pain, but only when walking and the more I force myself to walk the less pain!  I don't have any pain unless I'm walking. Still a lot of swelling. Hoping your pain will subside soon - it should.

I had my accident 9th November, operation 16th November after swelling went down. Totally smashed the ankle 21 fractures, dislocation. Four plates fitted. I don't now have pain. Finding  it's the tightness and swelling that most uncomfortable. Have exercises from physio to try and loosen the ankle. Can walk a little unaided around my rooms with a limp.

Great to hear you're starting to walk! The human body is amazing! Keep it going!

Hi thanks for reply so your about 2 weeks in front re recovery do you drive?
    • Posted

Yes, I was allowed to drive at 11 weeks. Was afraid the toes would be too painful because I drive a stick shift (1989 Toyota) but the pain was minimal and gradually went away. I was so glad I no longer had to rely on others to drive me to doctor appts, grocery store, library, etc.

      Hi!

I too broke my ankle and have hardware ($15,000.00 worth!) It happened almost the same day as you, Dec 20th 2015.

So it's taken over 3 months but I'm finally able to walk on it without the aid of a crutch--although not very well. I have to go very slow and concentrate on moving that foot properly, fully heel to toe. Still a bit painful. Stairs and driving are much easier than walking!

I was wondering if your ankle/leg is still swollen? Mine is still noticeably larger than my good foot. Am wondering if it will ever look the same. Maybe it's the titanium plates making it look larger! Yikes! According to these posts it could takes months more--such a slow process but every day it does seem to get s wee bit better!

My highlight of his recovery process was the day I was able to step into the shower unaided!! Woohoo! And driving!!!

Well, I'd be very interested in hearing how your recovery is coming along! We are blessed it wasn't both ankles!!

In a shower unaided! Now that is a goal to reach for!! I'm two months behind you. Thanks for posting this info! Good to know what to expect and that the swelling will probably continue for a while too. The unknown is what is scary...hearing everyone's real life experiences really helps!!

Hi Patti~ yes I was happy to see this site too! Was worried about the swelling issue-- I think I'll begin to elevate and ice again. Forgot to mention I am 63 and was quite active until his happened. Zumba 4x a week! Can't imagine that now, but it's my next big goal!

One of the posts mentioned comfrey cream so I will give that a try for the swelling! It was highly recommended :-)

Oh Zumba....so so much fun! I bet your Zumba gained you the muscle, good blood/oxygen flow, and strength to heal better and faster than most people will. You deposited extra into your body's bank and I bet now you will get the dividends from that. How are you healing? How far along are you?

It's been 3 months now! My doctor thinks I'm still a bit stiffer than I should be and wants me to go to physical therapy. But my insurance doesn't cover the 2-4 hundred dollar sessions. I found a couple really good ankle rehab YouTube videos from PT's though and have been doing those at home. It's feeling stronger everyday! Still limping a bit but stairs and driving are easy! I have a handicap tag for parking till July!

Good for you for finding and following the videos. I looked them up too and found them really informative and easy to follow, although I can't start until I'm out of the cast- maybe in about 3 weeks. I'm really looking forward to starting the exercises, although I know it can hurt to do them. What do you have? A broken ankle- single break or more? Sounds like rehab can get super expensive! Looks like you have a great plan though.

Thanks Patti ! I broke it 3 places and dislocated it. Dr put 2 plates and multiple screws in! I was in a soft cast for 6weeks, then in a removable boot--which I must admit I kept off unless I left the house. No weight on foot, but I was allowed to move and flex it. I was shocked that my calf muscle was atrophied, so I really worked at getting some movement there. It came back pretty quick (a couple weeks) so don't worry about that. Slow slow process but it'll come. I've also been using magnesium spray and rubbing Solomen's seal salve on it daily. (Cortesia brand). Might be aiding in recovery. My pain level is pretty low so I think it has helped.

Well, enjoy your "time off" , read, knit, serial binge! Guilt-free laziness! I love it!

Thank you for your info Grace. It's really helpful. Sounds like a lot of people take the boot off if they are resting and being careful...great to know that is an option, because I'm sure it is not comfy and it probably is good for the leg to get some fresh air too. What was the date of your injury and surgery? My condition sounds pretty close to yours. My injury is called trimalleolar. Is that what yours is? I have one plate and 11 screws. Thanks also for the product info. I'll get some of those and try them for when my cast goes off. For some reason the doctor/medical group I have likes to leave the cast on for about 10 weeks for the triple break. I like the protection of the cast and it is pretty comfortable, but I really want to get in and rub my leg and bring it back to life...and I must say the option of a shower sounds great! I am always hopping in and out of a bath every day at this point. Do you or anyone out there know if it is okay to wash the incision area after 10 weeks and have a warm bath and wash it with soap? I would assume it is okay if there are not obvious problems with the incision. I just was curious what to expect. Thank you Grace! You have a great attitude about the whole thing btw. Sometimes I think I am so anxious to move forward, and that I should just try to enjoy the downtime a little along the way....because things will get extra busy once walking comes back. You make a great point!

PS-  Are you located in the US or UK? I'm in California in the Bay Area.

I'm in Ohio!  Lake Erie is in my backyard!  Love the Bay Area and California, we visited in 07.  Walked up and down telegraph hill twice looking for the famous Parrots! lol! only to find out that at that time they were on the OTHER side of the hill!  Up we went again!!  But it was fun--then flew to Burbank to do Hollywood!  Saw the very first BigBang Therory filmed.  Really a trip to remember :-)

So back to the ankle business... so I rechecked my diary of events today and was shocked to see my memory was so off as far as the timeline!  Surgery: 12-22-15, first appointment 1-4-16:wanted to remove stiches but didn't. too swollen.  (DAH! YA THINK!) 1-BUT, he removed the cast and gave me the boot!  Really didn't remember that being so soon. - So at this time No water or cream or anythng on area-  1-11-16: stiches came out and replace with a thin adhesive tape.  Now I'm allowed to get it wet.   SO with the help of a shower chair I began to shower with help getting into the stall and out again.  (I'm using a walker at this time because I hate the crutches).  So approximatly 3 weeks to first shower.  The tape gradually just comes off over the next week or so in the shower. The next apointment was Feb 1. : Am allowed to put weight on it now.  This is the scary part.  And the month of Feb goes slow and easy with added foot flexing exercises.  I quit the diary at this point until March 10th when I noted that I "did the stairs and slept in my bed for the first time", and "took a shower totally on my own"!

My Doc deals mainly with sports injuries and young, well, spoty people, lol.  I guess that makes him a little impatient with the healing process. Young people DO heal quickly!   Oh.  I also have a "Open reduction interanal fixation trimalleolar"  !

Good ol' ORIF tri-mal...we almost match identically inside! You are two months ahead of Ron and I, so all the info you sent is most helpful! Thank you very much and please keep the info coming. It's great to hear you are doing so well! Sounds like as soon as this cast gets off in 3 more weeks (10 total) a shower can be taken...can't wait!  I know it is weird, that I have a cast instead of a boot all this time. My doctor said it is all kind of the same thing and he's found the casts are actually more form fitting, and since he works with a lot of athletes at his particular office (it's a sports orthopedic and rehabilitation medical office), he finds he likes to put his patients in casts or they try to do too much. Hmmm....I'm basically in lock down I guess. The cast saved me when I tried to jump a step on my walker once, and fell on the bad leg, (but didn't hurt it at all) so maybe he's right smile

I go to SF all the time, as I'm about 45 mins south of SF on the mid-peninsula, and have actually seen the parrots fly over where we stay when we are there! It is kind of crazy scene...there are so many of them and they turn and fly following each other and are so noisy when they fly over. I haven't seen them for several years now though. Hopefully they are still doing well.

      Take care- Patti

Question , I have back problems along with ankle, do you find balance shaky. Using walker in house to carry things around and pick up. Haven't driven yet waiting to have someone go with since car has sat since11-22. Hope you continue to improve.

      Hi Mar

im not sure where you on healing train, I m at 4 1/2 months just getting in my walker now, I had complications with RSD and foot not moving at all. It's at 25% so ways to go. Re driving, good idea to have someone with you. Are you in walker full time? Wishing you well 👣this is such a ongoing journey but it's encouraging to see everyone getting there, slowly.......

No only using walker caring things around house, cane going to therapy. Also have back problems, back out June to November had 3 procedures on back just doing well when fell. Going to drive sometime this week, car not driven since 11-22, so check, battery. Tires call AAA if necessary, then drive around subdivision. Been doing too much last few days, so now laying on heating pad/ice pad.

Take care don't rush and be very very careful, don't want to loose any ground.

You take care too.....do you have baths yet??  That has been my saving grace at Physio in therapeutic tub, awesome......enjoy your drive, I'm dreaming about it, haha....

No , since sister/ friends taking me going to small satellite therapy, no baths. Just want to get out, drive again have a little life and balance be better, combination of all problems throwing off. Please keep in touch stay safe and be careful, don't do too much

Hi mar,   sorry to hear you have two things going on!  I found the ankle alone to be quite a challenge in the first 2 months.  To answer your question about balance, at this stage, no. (3 months out, walking with slight limp)  I have pretty strong core muscles though from previous excercising and I'm sure that has helped.

You are wise to have that walker handy if you feel unbalanced.  You sure don't want to fall and break something else!!

Its a slow process but I'm sure everyday it WILL get better for you!

lol! Lock down!  Well it sounds like the cast saved you once so it's worth it! Can you at least wiggle you toes-- (my question mark key is broken)

I've ordered the comfrey cream-- will let you know how that works out soon!

      take care!   gracie :-)

      HI Gracie-

Please do let me know what you think about the comfrey cream. In all my research, it kept coming up...using the cream and also using fresh comfrey poultices. I can't wait to get started on those in 3 weeks when my cast comes off. I'm really curious if they work.

I started wiggling my toes right after surgery and massaging them daily 2 weeks after my surgery, with Christopher's CompleteTissue and Bone Ointment. They were really really sore and kind of frozen and very brusied back then. Within two weeks I was able to majorly loosen them up and they have been great since then and not sore at all. Since they are the only thing I can move, below my  knee, I wiggle them once an hour to keep them loose and to try to keep blood flowing there. One area down! Thanks!

Hi, I've heard comfrey works well, but a friend also warned me not to use before 100% sure bone is set correctly or there is risk of bone growth in wrong position. seems comfrey can woek TOO well! Once your cast comes off and doc is happy with x-rays its surely safe to go for it?!

Hi! Glad to hear you've been wiggling and massaging those toes! I think that's really going to help in the long run. AND guess what, lol, I ended up purchasing exactly what you already have! After reading everyone's reveiws on Amazon Christopher's complete tissue and bone got the best reviews. It has the organic comfrey root high on the list of ingredients so it was listed with the comfrey product for sale. It actually looks just like the Solomen's Seal I was using so after checking the ingredients I see comfrey is listed second, right after the Solomen's seal. -- I did a little test and quit using the Solomen's S for 2 days while waiting for the Christopher's to arrive...(it was getting sore when walking) then last night I rubbed it on before bed. (Amazon actually delivered it in Sunday! Amazing). This morning no pain at all ! Still a bit stiff but the best it's felt yet! Showered and even stood on that right foot while lifting left leg into pant leg! Definitely stronger! 👍 Keep your Christopher's ! I'm guessing the poultices will be a great help too. 😎

Showered the other day ,no problem. Except hot water went out half way thru ,had hair cream rinse,  still glad for shower. Yes not knowing what to expect is scary, plus people not understanding, very cautious, you take care, don't rush . M

Thanks for letting me know! So glad to hear it worked for you. That makes me so happy to hear that. I had exactly the same result: quick acting relief and never had a problem again with my toes being stiff after using it for a week or so (I used it about the second or third week after surgery). I would massage it into my toes and the top of my foot (I could only reach an inch or so in by my cast) and then I left extra there to soak in overnight. Before I used it, that area of my foot was very tight, bruised feeling and sore.  I hadn't read the ingredients on the Christopher's Complete Tissue and Bone (only the ratings that put it super high on Amazon)..interesting it has the comfrey as a main ingredient...seems to always come back to comfrey when I research natural ways to heal broken bones online. I had never heard of comfrey before this injury. The Christopher's seems to work great. Hopefully other people will have luck with it too! I think it would be good for those with knee problems (sounds like a lot of people get knee and muscle problems once they start PT and WB), so I am sure I will be slathering it on once my darned cast gets off at week 10. Anything that helps is worth trying!

Thanks...I am trying to learn to be patient, but it is very difficult! This has been very humbling smile

Very true about knee pain.  I also experienced some when starting to walk again because of the limited range of motion in the foot. Massaging in the salve does work.   Just don't put an ace bandage around it!! I did that for a day and almost caused a blood clot!  The whole leg swelled up on me!  Found out later never to wrap anything around the knee area.

I'm getting excited about you getting your cast off now! lol!  Fingers crossed!!

I just ran into someone else who broke their ankle that way (sledding with kids).

I found a list of the most common ways people break their ankles and found it interesting in case you want to know:

-Most ankle injuries are the result of sports activities or twisting the ankle while walking on an uneven surface

      -Slipping on ice

      -Car crashes

-Dropping a heavy object on an ankle

      -Twisting the ankle and overuse

-Tripping, falling or jumping down from too high

-A simple misstep causing ankle to turn in a certain way and break

-Tiny cracks called stress fractures caused overtime by overuse and repeative force in weight bearing bones

      -Unstable footwear and high-heeled shoe

      -Use of improper sports equipment

      -Ice skating

      -Falling off a ladder

-Participation in high impact sports (football, hockey, gymnastics, ballet, tennis, soccer, skiing and snowboarding)

I have read many posts about knee pain and there are probably many reasons for it, including lack of overall use due to the injury etc.  I also am beginning to notice knee pain (on my good leg), just today for the first time, during this intital PWB process with crutches. I definitely realize what I am doing wrong...it's bad step form. On turns, I have been tending to twist the good knee to the right or left while turning, while I have the injured leg behind me, as I crutch through a step. Turns are hard, because at 25% WB you aren't pivoting on your injured leg, you are turning with the good knee, causing it to get possibly tweaked in the process. I am switching my style tomorrow to try to be careful on the turns now. It takes a bit longer, but I realize form is important- I am now going to do a small hop hop hop around turns, so I don't twist my knee. Thought I'd put this out there for the other PWB neophytes, just in case it can help anyone. We all don't need to lose the use of the good leg....that's for sure! Still learning....

All good points!  I found the walker easier navigating through the house when I only had use of one leg, and I had the bad leg out infront of me where I could keep an eye on it.  Really felt those quads burning in the beginning!  Be careful!

I just found this site. It is comforting to know that I am not the only one sitting around with her leg elevated. I am going to order this Tissue and Bone cream. It sounds like what I am wanting about now. I have a triamalleolar break also from Feb. 8th, surgery on Feb. 18th.. so I am just a little over 2 months out. I'm down to a boot when I get it put on and one crutch most of the time. So I am to where I can put weight on it as much as I can stand it. I usually do pretty good. My ankle itself still swells up a bunch as soon as I have it down for any period of time at all. I guess it is comforting to see that this is not abnormal. I look forward to chatting to you all. I, like a couple others on here am 62 years old but in good shape. I have never broken anything before now so it is all new to me. It is a huge lesson in humility and patience.

Hi Cass! Welcome! You are just a week ahead of Ron and I. Glad to hear you are one crutch! That is great news! It's a doozy with the 3 bone break, isn't it? I have a plate and 13 screws installed. How about you? Are you in the UK or US? They are keeping me in a cast for the next 2-1/2 weeks still. I'm really looking forward ot getting out of my cast and being able to massage my leg and shower.

I am in the USA. I live in Missouri now. I have a plate with 8 screws in it and then 3 large screws. I had a splint on it until I saw the Doctor, then a very uncomfortable cast until surgery and then another spint. I guess I got that off on March 2nd. So I only had the cast/splint on it from 2/18 until 3/2/16. But I still could not put any weight on it although it was not in a cast.  It was kind of scary. I do have a removeable boot and I use it when I leave the house. Taking a shower is wonderful as is getting to move your ankle and massage your leg.  I bet you can't wait. I got to start putting some weight on it as of the 30th of March. I haven't been laid up like this before and have to keep reminding myself that it won't heal overnight. Sort of like the Dr. said you could start putting 'some' weight on it ~ he didn't say you could jump and run. It has been helpful to see other people's progress and worries. It makes me to not feel so alone in this whole healing process.

I had a very similar situation as you, but my doctor at home in California where I live, likes to cast tri-mals for 10 weeks instead of putting a boot on them. My accident was 2/16 and surgery 2/17. I had surgery in Hawaii on the Big Island. I was glad the island had a good surgeon, who my doctor at home checked out with a friend he knew there, and told me he had a lot of experience. He told me if I flew home, my leg could swell a lot causing a possible week or more delay in surgery, and tons of discomfort, so we decided I should do it there and went into surgery 15 hours later. I met people on the island later that week, after the surgery, when I hobbled out to dinner, who told me he was everyone's orthopedic surgeon of the island, so I guess he had a lot of experience and it seems he did a great job. I sent him a note to thank him, as I haven't seen him since I left. I was in a splint for 5 days until I flew home (not my best vacation to say the least) and they put a cast on me a few days after I landed. Since then, they change the cast every two weeks, because it gets too lose, as sadly I watch my calf muscle atrophy. I only have 3-1/2 weeks left and then I'll be like you, in a boot I think, and starting PT. I started PWB last Tuesday and am so happy to be slowly trying to get my leg and foot stronger and to begin a soft little step that I like to think is kind of a walk. I now think the path ahead is getting clearer and it is one we'll all eventually get to the end of, but it's going to be a long slow walk back. Might as well smell the roses along the way I guess, as I doubt we'll ever take this path again. It's been really great so far to have people help with the road map and to give encouragement on this expedition, as we are walking alongside each other, some ahead, some behind, and some falling down along the path and needing to be gently picked up so they can continue. It's a really kind, sweet group. I'm glad you are here with us too now!

You can say that again in rehab from December 6 to January 25, horrible, would not help get up, no weight bearing , so forced to use bed pan til I could put weight on, was in wheel chair except for therapy til last 10 days. Doing therapy, with back and knee issues having trouble with balance.

Using cane carefully, most people are very nice about opening doors. Surprised at not realizing or remembering how heavy some business doors are. Today doors therapy ok, but picked up taxes, fortunately someone helped. Just be careful, keep up as much as possible and ice often, careful. Mar

I'm so sorry Mar! You are been through so much! But it sounds like you are out of the wheel chair finally. That's fantastic news! I think from what I've read that some knee, muscle, back etc problems are normal on the road to recovery. We have thrown our bodies majorly out of alignment. Until we gain strength back, and create that balance we disrupted, we are going to be up for some pain. Our bodies are pretty miraculous though. They are working overtime to try to repair the damage we've done to them. We just need to be patient and help them out as much as possible. Hang in there!!

      Patti!

You broke it in Hawaii on vacation!🙈 What a nightmare! Hope it was near your last day!!💓

    • Posted

I broke my ankle on the first day of vacation. I sat on a hammock with someone, and the strap attaching the hammock to the tree, broke from their side and I was higher up, and my ankle twisted as I fell down hard on it. I have never broken a bone before...this was a weird one...just a very hard impact twist that broke all 3 bones in the ankle when I hit. They said it is always the first day when vacationers come into the hospital. They told me they have a lot of drownings in Hawaii and how sad it is when vacationers come into the ER, to find their loved ones have died drowning in the ocean. Really put the whole thing in perspective I'd say!  I certainly never have any right to complain for sure...even though I forget and do it sometimes. I saw so many people with neck braces and broken limbs when I was in the ER...you realize people can push too hard on vacation. We all like to play like kids sometimes and forget we may not be quite as limber as we used to be!

I too was on vacation Grace in the UK from Australia ( although a Yorkshire lass) I was 2 weeks into my holiday and I did mine descending Mam Tor out in the countryside. I had to of course cancel my flight and I didn't fly back until nearly 3 months. I was in constant pain and sleeping night and most of the day. It truly was the holiday from hell. 😫

You poor thing! Why did you stay a whole 3 months? Did you slip on stones? That was about 2 years ago? Trying to recall. What a vacation! So sorry to hear that.

Isn't it amazing we from all parts of the world here and have come together on this website?

      Hi Patti.

It was last August 2015. I was in a mess both physically and mentally. The surgeon told me I wasn't allowed to fly anyway. It's a 24 hour flight with a 3 hour stopover. I was needing care and over here I live alone. I was with family in the UK and was looked after. When I finally did go home I had to have wheelchair service and it was murder taking the camboot on and off on the plane to let people pass to use the toilet, etc. my crutches were overhead and I was frightened to death of falling.

I was descending Man Tor when it started to rain. The descend was very steep and the grass was wet. After the fall it was thunder and lightening and it was pelting it down and I was laid there in all this pain, which was far worse than child bearing. I had a women sit next to me trying to comfort me and she wouldn't leave me. My brother was phoning for help etc. I was rescued by EDALE rescue team, given copious morphine, put on a stretcher and carried back up and airlifted by helicopter to the trauma unit at the Northern General hospital. My clothes were cut off and I was finally dried off 😖 It was hell.

Wow! how scary. Some of the stories you all are sharing make me feel so lucky that my fall was so mundane. It was bad enough gong through this in a new living area. We moved from Colorado to Missouri several months back. But to be clear out of country would be hard. It is amazing to see what others have been through. Bless you MsCamboot.

Oh my gosh! That sounds very terrible! At least your family there took such good care of you, but I bet you were so glad to finally get back to your home after so long. Did you have surgery over there? Could you remind me the extent of your injuries?

Patti. My ankle shattered. I broke the Tibia, Fibia and inner ankle bone with a dislocation. I have a plate with screws running up the fibula, a plate and screws across and up the Tibia and 2 screws in the inner ankle bone. Because of the quality of my bones the inner ankle bone isn't smooth any more as I lost fragments of the bone. This gives me the most pain but still get pain everywhere else in the ankle and that's including the foot. I can feel the 2 screws digging in at times. I doubt with my bones they could ever be removed. I have good and bad days, walk slowly and with a limp. I am having both physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. I do the exercises at home also and walk 30 minutes a day X 2. The surgeon told me I'm at the worse end of the spectrum regarding ankle breaks. I have a fear of falling and being in crowds and being bowled over. I'm now 8 MONTHS POST OP. Hope all is good with you Patti.

So sorry to hear that! You have been through so much! What exercises do you do with hydrotherapy? Have you tried comfrey to harden the bones?

      Hi Patti.

No I haven't tried Comfrey, as I don't believe rubbing something on my skin will heal bones. But not against anyone using it if they think it works. I take medication, 6 monthly injections for my condition and copious calcium, which wasn't excluded before the ankle break. My bones went downhill after menopause due to low levels of estrogen.

Regarding hydrotherapy exercises. I sit on a noodle and pedal up and down the pool ( no flippers now, due to pain) I tip toe the breath of the pool and back X 3, same exercise again but on the heels only X3. I stand on the steps going down to the pool and stand on the bottom step with tip toes, hold rails and push legs back and hold for a count of twenty x5, to stretch the calves. I go on the wobble board and try to balance or move from side to side or to the front and back holding the pool hand rails. I use a step in the pool to go up and down. I sit on something in the pool and wear foam rings on my ankles and move my ankles up and down. I do the foot to wall and try to press my knee to the pool wall but can't get the knee to the wall, hold 30seconds,X5. ( also do this at home without water) also put a rubber ring on my ankle and move my leg up and down holding the pool hand rails. Well with all this, physio, home exercises and walking I would hope I'm making some improvements but the physio at the pool today said its the journey not the destination. I just have to keep at it and remain positive which can be hard when your ankle is being a suck and telling you it's hurting. I was so fit and active before all this. I felt young and vibrant but I really thi
