I had fractured my ankle in July this year. Had it in plaster for six weeks, had a review with consultant yesterday. Had another x ray and consultant confirmed the bone had healed, but I explained to him that I my ankle keeps swelling and is painful. Can't walk very far and he said it could be the soft tissue area may have fragments of cartilage init, but because I have a pacemaker can't have a MRI scan. He has told me to come back in 3 months time.I have to have psyiotherapy . what do i do if it keeps on swelling.I don't have much faith in the consultantbreally

For anyone with the pain on the top of their foot and big toe, I just left my first appt with the PT and he said the casting people at my doctor's office probably put my cast on too tight, because I shouldn't be having the numbness and pain on the top of my foot, with the trimalleolar break. Funny, the doctor told me just last week it was normal and was from having my foot still in the cast for 7 weeks.  Hmmm...sounds like his guys may have put it on too tight...anyway, the good news is that the PT said that nerves come back, this is nothing permanent, and the massaging I have been doing is exactly right and that's why I having a good recovery from that pain (now 4 weeks out of the cast and about 90% of numbness has gone away). Just wanted to throw that out there, since last week I mentioned to you all that my doctor had said the numbness was from normal cast wearing.

Also, wanted to mention, my PT and lots of people ask me about my "Evenup" which is a simple black strap that goes over my tennis shoe to make it taller to match my other foot ,with the boot on it. Everyone that sees is mentions what a good idea it is. I love it. Check it out on Amazon " ProCare Evenup Shoe Balancer ". Keeps the body in alignment while walking with a boot.

Hi Patti. I also have pain in the top of the foot but it is not from the cast. I had only a back slab and bandages due first to the swelling then because of the surgery. I then went straight into a boot. Mine is definately from immobility for 8 weeks. It is slowly improving now.

That's good to know Diane. Maybe it is mainly from immobility then. I managed to massage most of it out, so at least it wasn't a permanent condition, which is nice to know.

As an update re. pain on the top of the big toe and top of the foot, it took me about 5 weeks to thoroughly massage it all out and now I have maybe only 2% tightness left in there. Turns out the PT exercises really helped to loosen those tendons up too and fire them back out of the frozen and sizziling pins and needles position they were in when I first got my cast off (after 7 weeks). At week 12 now. Wanted to post, for those who have similar worries.

Hi Sharon- We have all been there and totally understand the physical and emotional pain you are going through. We're here whenever you need us. Sorry you are going through all this- it does get better though.... being patient is the hardest, because it takes a little time. You are at the hardest time emotionally right now and I promise you that you have some real improvements coming ahead. Hang in there and try to look at it as an opportunity to do some things you've always wanted time to do from bed. The body is miraculous and knows how to heal you. It will do a good job in the end.

Thanks Patti123 I'm not usually the sort of person that feels sorry for myself but definitely not felt so incapable of doing things even when I've previously had operations and broke my wrist always managed to get about and do things but yes your right you have to take it as an opportunity to catch up with things that you haven't had time to do before I've been crocheted baby blankets even taught my 18 year old granddaughter to crochet as well I have lots of little sewing jobs that need doing I'm a bit ocd so if I see something that's not right that's when it gets a bit frustrating but reading what everyone else has been through has helped thank you all so much look forward to hearing from you all xx

hi sharon, you might want to try the iWalk 2.0 in order to get around while non weight bearing. i've found it a life saver. it leaves the hands free to carry things, while you can walk securely on the 'peg leg'.

Boy, reading your post sure brought back ugly memories.... Being stuck in one spot for eternity!! Well it is a week later and I hope you are feeling a little better. For seveal weeks I didn't think it would ever get any better. Part of that time is when you have to be in lock down for everything to have a chance to heal. And like you I didn't think I was much of a complainer, but this stuff really got me down. Not moving is depressing. I did do a lot of reading and crocheted several items. I am only 14 weeks post surgery and I have had huge improvements the past few weeks. I know it is different for each individual but I just wanted to share with you that there really is light at the end of the tunnel. I know that for some time I was unsure about that.  Keep letting us know how you are doing.. and best wishes for you.

Hi, Sharon!  Boy do I feel your pain!  Literally.  It's been 5 months for me and my ankle still swells horribly.  Right now I am mostly happy that I can now walk and am starting to get back to doing more things, especially that the weather is so nice.

Pas I wrote in another post I went and bought a good pair of shoes to give me more support.  They had to fiddle with my good shoe so it wouldn't be too big, but it helps a lot.  I also try to massage my foot each night with comfrey cream.  I don't know if the comfrey helps, but at this point I'll try anything.  The massaging helps get the blood flowing.  The rest of it is just time I think.  When the swelling gets bad, keep your chin up.  (And your foot) It will get better.  And I have some lovely knitting it show for it!😏

PS.  A knee walker was a life saver for me!  I couldn't do stairs, but was so much more mobile than wheel chair or crutches.   Very stable - I could stand up with good balance.

I would like to share a homeopathic mixture for the reduction of swelling that results from trauma or injury (broken bones, bruises or strains ) . The spice turmeric is a known natural anti-inflammatory. The recipe:the yoke (the yellow separated from the white) of a egg. Mix in the spice, ground turmeric to make a paste. Mix in 1 half teaspoon of olive oli. Apply with a basting brush over injured area. Do not use on any area of broken skin or open wound. Allow the mixture to dry (10 minutes ). Rinse the mixture off. Use as often as you like. I have a broken right ankle and am 5 weeks into the healing process. I have been prescribed the use of a air cast/boot. I can remove the boot and do this 2 times, morning and night. I am not a physician and take no responsibility for recommendations of this treatment. I only wish to share my success with others.

Try compression socks, and ice & elevation on and off throughout the day. Massage can also help the swelling.
