Frequent awakenings every night, vivid dreaming.

Hi guys I'm still having issues with insomnia for over a year. My nights can range from taking hours to fall asleep, no sleep at all but when I do fall asleep relatively quickly I wake during vivid dreaming about 4x a night, it's often been like that since my sleep troubles began.

I feel tired every day and often I feel depressed and irritable. My doctor has tried me on phenergan, mirtazapine, zopiclone and zolpidem. I've had the most success with the latter two especially for sleep onset but I still wake at least once even when taking them, the only times they work most of the night is when I've not slept at all the previous night, it's like I have to be very sleep deprived. I have probably only slept through the night close to 10 times in the last 14 months without any waking. So to keep waking up in the night dreaming is getting old and irritating. If I didn't dream so much I would probably sleep through. It's like I have a very overactive mind even when asleep and I find it hard to reach deep sleep. Unless I've answered my own question does anyone got an idea what is up with me? Thanks.
