Frequent urination

Posted , 8 users are following.

i am a 74 year old male and had my THR one week ago.  There is no pain, a little discomfort, and I am walking with two sticks.  The only problem is having to get up 5 or 6 times in the night to go to the bathroom.  I never had this before.  I am OK during the day.  Could it be because of the catheter I had for 2 days, or medication?  Has anyone had anything similar?

    Hi Martin

welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new hip.

it could be caused by both the catheter and or the medication.

It it should get better after about a week if it were the catheter. It won't cure till you are off the meds if it is the meds. Just don't let yourself get dehydrated. Because that could cause you other issues.

Martin, hello i like you am one week on i find i use the loo more, i put it down to drinking more water than normal, i had a catheter to,, i would be interested in finding out

Yes I was up and down all night for about 3 weeks. I didn't have a catheter though and the only different medication I had was the blood thinning meds so not sure what caused it.

I'm back to the normal up twice a night now!!

Thanks, perhaps only 2 more weeks and I ll get a decent night's sleep!  I am on 1000mg paracetamol twice a day, omeprazole and rivaroxaban (blood thinner)  once a day.

      I had Rivaroxaban daily, 1x500mg paracetamol 4 times a day, Tramadol 1x50mg 4 times/day,Diclofenac 1x75mg 2/day

Not sure what causes the frequent urination, as i am still on the rivaroxaban, but it is definitely getting better now.

    Martin,

I feel for you - at last I have found someone who has the same problem I had biggrin

I had no catheter, but frequent trips (almost hourly) to the loo were a real pain. it seems to be easing off now at 23 days, with just 2 trips last night.

    Best wishes

Yep, same problem although no catheter and no drugs (exceot the occasional paracetemol). Couldn't figure out what was going on but it does return to normal.

    Mi M:

Wonder if the catheter has caused irritation to your bladder, which only shows up when you are lying flat on your back?

    Just a suggestion....

    Hi Martin,

I'm no expert but maybe it's because you were sleeping more lightly due to having to be on your back and being anxious about your new hip and worrying about getting in and out of bed.  I don't sleep well, and I know on restless nights I'm up and down to the loo all night.

I hope the waterworks are back to normal soon xx

Hi Martin. This is a very common side effect.  The blood thinners are the cause and you will be back to normal after you are allowed to stop taking them.  Be a patient patient and all will sort itself out in the end. Till then happy flushing lol.

I had similar worries, and I scoured the information leaflet - nothing on there about this effect.  Thank goodness for this forum, so much good information exchanged here.
