Fresh Fruit Quantities?

Posted , 4 users are following.

Husband has steroid induced raised blood glucose levels.

I've found conflicting advice on varying supposedly knowledgable websites - some say to eat plenty of fresh fruit and others say to restrict the amount. (He doesn't yet have a monitoring kit.)

What's the general experience of members of this forum  please?

Restrict. If you want yo try and reverse the disease limit to two small portions a day. For example 1/2 an apple at breakfast and lunch. Kiwis and berries of all types are excellent choices, skip the bananas. Stay away from fruit juices.

There’s no point in limiting fruits if you're eating pastries or other goodies.

Do some research on “glycemic index”. This will help you know which fruits are your best choices.

Learn to "count carbs".  And, is he using a blood glucose meter?

A "regular" sized apple, about one cup of fruit, is about 15 carbs, with a medium glycemic index.

    Same with most fruit.

One piece with a meal is probably just fine, even good.

Fruit *juice* is apparently much worse because it has no glycemic index, it hits you all at once, like eating sugar.

So control your overall carb count, feel free to eat one or two pieces of fruit per meal within that count, but don't try to live on a fruit diet or anything like that.

Restrict.  Certain fresh Vegetables are very good (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Peppers and some others) but check carb content.  Fruit is generally full of sugar, avoid.
