I went to the Dr last Wed 5/23 . Was having bad panic attacks well after 10 yrs he said I had Paxil poop out and he increased my dose from 20mg to 40mg. I started that day taking 20mg in the morning and 20 mg at night to get use to it. Now been taking 40mg in the morning for 3 days. Was wondering when it should kick in and start working good. I have .5mg Ativan to take as needed but try not cause don't want to get addicted. It's causing problems between my wife and I and I don't wanna lose her or our kids. Please help and shine some light.

It sounds like you're relying on the Paxil to do all of the work. This may sound harsh, but you need to do more on your part to overcome your panic attacks. If you and your wife love one another, sit down and develop a game plan together to combat your panic attacks. There's a ton of information out there regarding panic attacks. If that doesn't work, seek the help of a psychologist.

Hang in there. Panic attacks - like all forms of anxiety - can be conquered. Whatever you do, don't give up.

I don't just rely on the Paxil I try other things and even walk for 30 mins a day. Just saying I'm ready for the paxil to kick in so I can feel like I did when it worked before. I always worry about health and the next attack and I know that's a big problem and adds fuel to the fire but just can't help it.

I always worry about health and the next attack

Right now your fear is controlling you. The key is to control your fear. Try using reverse psychology. Instead of worrying about your next attack, treat it as something good and look forward to it happening. You know panic attacks aren't deadly, so make a game out of it. When you feel an attack coming on, start laughing and think "this isn't so bad". Let your heart race, body sweat, and whatever other things produced by the attack. Embrace it. This method may not work right away, but with practice your fear and panic attacks will begin to lessen.

Hi Jeremy. I have been on 20 mg of Paxil for 25 years, since I was diagnosed with chronic depression when I was 38. That dosage still works for me after all those years, but every once in awhile-when I'm going through a stressful period-I bump it up to 40 mg. I take one pill in the morning, the other once about 3:00 pm. It 'takes effect' right away.

But, I need to add-I take Paxil for Depression and have never found it to be very effective for anxiety disorders. I have occasional anxiety attacks and when they are really bad and frequent I have some Xanax to help me relax and sleep at night. I only take .25 mg of Xanax and only once a day-for the same reason you're careful with Ativan-we've all read horror stories about getting hooked on those drugs and the withdrawal being difficult.

I'm still waiting for them to come out with an effective drug for anxiety that you can take more often without getting hooked on it. I guess it hasn't been found yet, or I haven't heard of it. But, for what it's worth, I've found Paxil to be very effective for the type of depression I suffer from. And I've never gotten 'used' to the dosage so I needed to up it for that. As I am now 63 I hope that continues into my senior years.

Good luck with the wife and kids, I know how anxiety can cause problems with a relationship. One more thing you might want to try is getting plenty of exercise. A good, tiring walk (I do it with my two dogs) can take a lot of the nervous excitement out of you and help you sleep at night. Drugs are great, but anxiety and depression need to be addressed with exercise, therapy and diet as well.
