Frozen hip or adhesive capsulitis of the hip.

A little over a year ago I had a really bad fall in my hip, after few weeks I started to develop a little bit of discomfort and I went to see a doctor. Doctor sent me to physio but it didn't seem to help. 6 months later I had lots of snaping sounds, my leg start to give away. Now I saw a specialist that send me for diferent kind of tests, including bone scan, ct scan, X rays, MRI arthrogram. I didn't had any flexion, extension, abduction , adduction , internal rotation and external rotation. The results of all these tests came out negative, not even labral tear, my hip was perfectly fine.
I think the radiologists, doctors are very unfamiliar and misdiagnose these problem, they didn't know what to make out of it. The specialist wanted to send me back to my GP doctor, then I explain to him what I was thinking my problem was, "adhesive capsulitis of the hip" or "frozen hip" he got a surprise face and promise me to take a read on it and that I had to come back to see him, not after sending me for a second cortizone injection that didn't do nothing for me. Came back to see him after my second cortizone shot 6 weeks later, told me he had a read in to my problem and that was likely that I actually had that diagnosis. He mention to me he was very unfamiliar with this condition he would have to send me with another specialist to see if he would happen to see any of these diagnosis. Now Im waiting for the second specialist appointment. I live in Canada and here takes up to a year or more to see a specialist. Here I'm almost 14 months later, still suffering from a terrible pain, imposible to have a decent sleep at night. Im a 47 year old women and seems that Im in the age range for this kind of condition to ocurre. Despicte I think mine was because of the terrible accident I had. I just wanted to share this and see if anybody out there suffer the same condition or have been under diagnose. I hope to heard from any of you, would be really good to create awarenes of this terrible , debilitating condition.
Sorry, I hope my writting is good enough to understand.

are you better now?
I read your post and can relate so much!
I was just ... Finally ! Dx w a frozen hip by my Chinese Med Dr. I am so relieved that I finally know what's wrong. And I'm confident he can fix me.. The pain is so horrible and my mobility sucks!
I went thru the same crap as you.. Was told there's nothing wrong, just some mild arthritis.. But I knew there was something seriously wrong.
Id love to hear from you . I hope you are doing better now.. Donna

Done everything posible, from accupuncture to kinesiologist, chiropractor, physio, you name it, with no results.
I still have no exterior rotation at all and my femur seems to be fuse to mi pelvis. This is being areally hard case of frozen capsulitis derived from a terrible fall.
Now, Im here in Mexico trying a new tratment of stem cells that are not approve in USA and Canada.
I had first sppointment before yesterday dr. Already found other problems that werent detected in x rays or MRI, etc. Having a ligament totally shatter where the fall ocurre 3 years ago, this brought so many issues due no to be detected on time.
He applysome stem cell hoping will repair some damage over time. He will need to do some arthroscopiv surgery to clean up the problem. He doesntdoubt adhesive capsulitis was or is psrt of the problem.
I will keep you updayed of the results.
Hopi g your case is not as complicated as mine. This is averry terrible and frustrating diagnosis, one that makes you cry.
People never will understan this if they dont go throug the same problem. Trying to explain them is a waste of time.
Very frustrated situation.
I wish allthe best to you, hoping you find some kind of relief pretty soon.
Many blessings to you.

Stem cells have been discussed for me too.
Good luck. My fingers are crossed for you.
I imagine you can relate to the feeling of a horse kicking you in the hip

Hi Oliveria. I too have lost hip mobility. I injured my back doing HIIT and while I tested my hip just froze. Pain has been increasing for a year now, and mobility is severely limited. Weight bearing is also affected. I was impressed reading your posts with how much you have learned about what appears to be a understudied condition.
I just had my first hip injection, which I hope will give me enough inflammation reduction to allow for working on rotation. I have a new hip orthopedist, but an concerned because they are currently treating for arthritis, which I have everywhere - but only the left hip is frozen. Arthritis stiffness & pain is something I am accustomed to. This is debilitating!
Regardless, please continue posting your progress as it makes me hopeful

Unfortunately, after almost 4 years still suffering, no exterior rotation, lots of discomfort.
I just had surgery 4 months ago, for a shutter ligament in my hip, probably, that wasnt helping to recover from my frozen hip.
I knew after the surgery I still had the problem with my frozen hip. Most doctors dont know what to do or how to cure it. Is almost like they dont believe is what the real problem is, because even when I mention to them what I believe, they always end up undermining my diagnosis.
This happen to me few times. How can you convince a doctor and after that convince them that you need surgery for adhesive capsulitis of the hip??? They dont want to do anything, because in the MRI or CT scans, etc... doesnt really show anything.
Finally I found a dr. That claims he can cure my frozen hip. I had my first appointment and a dozen of inyeccions to the muscles and one injection to the hip joint guided by ultrasound. Painful really painful, but I will put up with it, to see if this can bring the solution to my glue in joints (femur and pelvis) or frozen joint.
I probably will have my second appointment this week. I will post my progress as soon as I find resolution to my problem.
Besides this accupuncturist, massagist Dr. (Injections), that seems very knowledgeable and very professional, im seeing a reumatologist and orthopedic surgeon and see if between all this professional can do something for me. Is very debilitating condition. I hope Drs. Would understand that.
All the best to tou and if you find any solution to your frozen hip, please post it here, maybe we will be able to help other frozen hip or adhesive capsulitis of the hip sufferers.
Thanks a lot for your input in this issue, and I wish you all the best in your persuot for a solution to your problem.
Many, many bleesings to you.
Once again, all the best to you.

I have had 2 frozen shoulders and now have a frozen hip. The shoulders eventually went away on their own after 2 years. They both followed a similar pattern: gradual decrease of rom and increase in pain with It's peak at 3 months and gradual dissipation. This is different; no let up in sight. I tried physio but it made it worse. I am thinking of trying an osteopath. Anyone tried that?

Ok so I am actually in the process of finding out what is wrong with my hip as well. This is my third opinion in about a year and I just wanted an answer. I def know how you feel about wanting an answer for being in pain. I was a figure skater and may be reason y it happened but still unsure. I have had an injection didn't work then had a MRA which was terrible lol and then hi had another injection and going for another one and hoping it works just as good. They do think it's a frozen hip and or a Labral tear. I am finally having some relief from a injection i just received about 7 weeks ago and pt did not work. But finally glad to hear similar issues doctors thought I was crazy for the longest time and can't simply make up that much pain.

Five years ago, had a frozen shoulder, which appeared 2 months after an injury where I pulled my shoulder, and it gave me a burning pain. Aggressive therapy got it all moving again.
Now, 2 months ago, I pulled something and again had a burning sensation, but was fine........Now 2 months later, I started to feel that slowly, "creeping", stiffening sensation, however, didn't know you could get frozen hips. This has been going on for weeks, slowly feeling like a cripple. But because I baby sit my grandchild, I forced myself to keep moving. Tried Apple Cider Vinegar with water and Tumeric......and then started Aspirin, for pain & anti-inflamatory. Don't know which helped, but did make some progress. But now that I've read all on this site, I'm sure its frozen hip, and will see my orthopedic doctor and get a prescription for therapy with the one that helped me before.
Have to thank all on this site, because I was thinking the worst and thought I was doing more damage because I kept moving, but it must have loosened it somewhat, but not completely. I admit, this frozen hip, like the frozen shoulder, is the most unbearable excrutiating pain I have ever felt in my life. I cannot take painkillers, they make me sick to my stomach......I can only take aspirin for a little while before that wreaks havoc to my stomach due to Pernicious Anemia, but it curbs the pain. I do know that a good therapist, an aggressive one does the trick, but it hurts like hell, but works. Thank you all.

Hello Oliveira I hope you are doing much better as this post was made 4 years ago. Your condition caught my eye because I too have suffered from adhesive capsulitis in the past and my doctor did a procedure on me called manipulation under anesthesia. Basically the doctor puts you to sleep and moves your hip joint around in different directions. I am so happy to share my success with you because after I had that done my pain was completely gone and within 2 weeks of physical therapy I was back to normal it seriously saved my life. This would definitely be something to speak with your doctor about I really hope this helps you I can't stand to see people suffer with this when the solution is so easy.

Thank you very much for your email regarding my adhesive capsulitis of the hip.
I had manipulation in the past and didnt worked but for other reasons.
My problem was so complicated. Im convinced that I suffer from adhesive capsulitis for the first year or two.
First intervention was manipulation but didnt solve the problem. About a year ago had another surgery to clean up the adhesions but the pain still was there.
Dr. Decided to do a full hip replacement since all the studies I had didnt show anything at all.
Thankfully in the hip replacement surgery the Dr found out I had severe avascular necrosis, with the hip replacement my bone pain desapair. Im still dealing with other kinds of pains due to 5 years of inmobilization.
Im doing physio and pool daily and things are slowly improving. I dont knownif I will ever be perfect as before but at least Im not suffering the excrutiating pain that didnt allow me to enjoy life.
Thank you very much for your email you are a beautiful soul, concern for the well being of others.
Sending you a great hug and many mamy thank you for taking the time to writte me.
All the best for you 😘

Hello Peach862386,
After suffering from two frozen shoulders, I believe I am now suffering from a frozen hip. I've been dealing with this hip pain for almost two years. How did you find a Dr. that would perform your surgery? No one seems to know about frozen hips. So frustrating!!
Thank you for your help ?
