FRUSTRATED! 2 years post THR still have butt discomfort/pain
Posted , 5 users are following.
I am 2 year post THR - I followed all post op instructions, did all exercises. I am on my 10th Phys Therapist and no one, not the surgeon (everything he did was "perfect" according to him), saw a spine doc - some age-related changes, but nothing significant. I went into the surgery very fit (crossfit, hiking, yoga...), and have progressed to doing more substantial exercises everyday trying to get back to my more normal routine and though the butt pain reduced, it has never gone away and I cannot find anyone who can tell me why. Now it is throwing me into depression and getting in the way of my fitness and just daily life. I am 63 years old and we hike mountains, have to work on our small farm (weeding, planting, shoveling, pruning, etc.) and this is getting in the way of having a life. I have run out of "professionals" to go see. I've had 2 friends who've had this surgery - also fit athletes - and neither of them have had what I am dealing with.

you should have no pain and your x-surgeon is a JERK. get another opinion out of state and request a copy of all your records from OR surgery and follow up. check on the manu of the components. some have recalls you can check that online...and surgeons DO make errors with installation. , mis-matched components, errors on lining up the components incorrect positions.
REMEMBER not all THR complications show up in mri 's or X-ray .
the next step ... and i say this with a Strong Experienced Conviction ...'been there'...my very best advice is to request a heavy metal blood test. if metals are found in your blood stream then you have component issues and probably should be checked next 6 months. even ceramic components and poly cups all have issues ...if the metals in your blood system continues to rise then there is definitely a issue with the components. these components are very radical and can cause a huge number of painful issues.
see components-metals- ceramic rubbing- hip replacement...misaligned ball cup.
this how you know there is a serious issue even if nothing shows in xray or mri's and will need a revision. your surgeon should never have let you continue this long without taking steps to revise the components. shame on him.../her...
some of these orthopedic surgeons are not completely well trained with hundreds of hip replacement surgeries... THR is just a small part of their orthopedic practice/service .
see a surgeon who only does THR revisions and many under his/her belt. either way you may need exploratory surgery to find the cause of your pain and once found it all can be replaced with a revisionist specialist.
so sorry THR came to what was not expected after surgery. THR was to bring back better mobility and pain free . shame on your surgeon to leave you in the dark it is a #@*$.....&#^#....

I am 2 years or so on with my rehab.
All is going well, but I have have random days of random pains which settle down after a few days. To be followed by a few more pains in other areas.
Ie. Go for a jog or exercise bike or walk. Left calf tight or right calf tight, or slight knee pain. Crazy, but everything is linked up in the body. I have read that even after 3 years pain can still come and go. Im not sure if its a life time situation or maybe it will all go away in time. In my case of double hip replacement, I had a tight left calf for a year, then a tight right calf, which then switched over lol. And now both have finally settled down, possible because my spine has eventually realigned. Thai massage every few months also helped, alongside a chiropractor crunch every few months too. Of course we are told that joint replacements are never as mobile as an original joint, and when we push it too much we will get a reaction, which needs to be managed in the way that patients with replaced joints know all too well.
Good luck. Im sure you will see continued improvement but it may take longer than you think.

in my experience with three hip joint replacements. one hip is 30 years old and still tickin. the other hip had to have a revision ., due to a bad design, caused many complications. my hips and muscles always have ups and downs with sometimes severe pain or just simple daily discomfort . since my hip joints have replaced severe diseased joints these new hip joints do not move or rest well. its a long term pain issue and that's been my experience. its pain all the time and i get used to it. at least i have mobility and a better quality of life. it's not perfict but i'm stll movin...
its important to learn our limitations and take care of our new hips in order for them to last. dealing with the constant ups and down over the years always keep in mind to stay strong .

Hello there,
You must be frustrated! I'm reading my way through contributors with similar symptoms.
I'm into my 10th month now and it's not going as well as expected. I am beginning to think I've done some damage to myself! I'm sure you must have had these thoughts also.
This is my experience to date:
Persistent pain increasing. Pain in following areas:
3 X-Rays in 10 months, last one November 2022, so a couple of months ago and the feedback is the mechanics are as they should be.
I explained the pain, was given a minor examination and an ultrasound appointment made which was 31 December 2023. Awaiting feedback and an appointment to see the Consultant is February, which I presume is the follow-up of the ultrasound.
Feel like an irritant when I have these short appointments with the Consultant (who, incidently, isn't the one who performed the surgery). Am I expecting too much too soon? Having read your experience, I'd be interested to know if your symptoms have been the same as mine?
Many thanks.
