Frustrated after seeing Consultant

Hi ,

I had last colonoscopy in Jan 2018 , finally saw consultant today to discuss results! I had already made the assumption that there was nothing sinister going on due to no urgency for follow up. However once again when I go for my appointment I see a different  consultant. Straightaway confirms nothing sinister but says straightway 'just IBS' this is after previous 3 consultants have said DD is the problem . I questioned him and said was there no DD , he said yes but your problem is all IBS.  I then said why have other consultants said DD the problem but youre saying IBS only. Guess what he then says well I dont know your symptoms so can you tell me them. I start to tell him ie diarrhoea, pain, bloating , nausea , been to GP several times in the last year and needed antibiotics. Asked if antibiotics helped , I said Yes usually after a few days . Told him I do try to avoid anitibiotics and go on liquid diet as soon as high pain level however when this doesnt help I go to GP and get antibiotics. Didnt acknowledge any ot it just dismissed everything , said diarrhoea was not a symptom of DD only constipation, just need to change diet and everything will be fine . ( I had told him I get constipation aswel) Asked what medication I had had in the past event though he had my records in front of him. I couldnt remember so he then prescribed mebrivine and said go see a dietician . I got home and realised already tried mebrivine and it didnt work , made me have headaches and increased bloating and it had been prescibed by the same hospital!!. Told him I had been in pain since last week but he wasnt interested, completely ignored me , just kept saying youve probably got sensive bowel.

I feel so depressed and feel like a hypochondriac, my pain is still there , feel so tired and lethargic .

I know I have IBS , I have DD and know I have had flare ups however this consultant has more or less said no you havent had flare ups its all down to to IBS and we just need to change your diet and you will be healed!!!

Sorry for rant x

I am sorry you are having such a difficult time. I know doctors disagree on diverticulitis and diverticulosus but DD can be confirmed by ct scan and or colonoscopy. No if, ands, or buts. Stick with the doctors you trust. Change your diet for IBS and DD and hopefully this will help some. I really know your frustration and I wish I could help more. I hope you feel better soon.

How frustrating for you. A colonoscopy would show if you had DD. When the other consultants diagnosed DD was this found during a colonoscopy too? I was diagnosed by colonoscopy 5 yrs ago and flares are miserable. My consultant said it’s DD when you are older and IBS when you are younger. I must say my daughter in law suffers from IBS and her symptoms are very similar to a DD flare up. It is reassuring that there is nothing sinister going on however if you are not happy ask for a second opinion. Try not to get stressed as that is not good for IBS or DD. Hope you feel better soon.

Maybe it is best to try to forget what he said and go to your family doctor if you think you need antibiotics and tell him/her what this clown said and ask for another referal to a different doctor.

I agree with j09263  and go to your Dr and spill it out to him. If your previous colonoscopies showed DD that is what you have and you also have all the symptoms. The diverticulitis wouldn’t just dissapear seems to me that guy should be in another job!

Go to your Doctor and see what he say's, he can also get your records from that Doctor if you sign for them. keep tying till you get answers that are right, not just what they think.

If you've had a colonoscopy then the Doctors must know whether it's Diverticulosis or IBS! I'd ignore this doctor if you've already been diagnosed with DD. IBS is just an umbrella they use when they don't know what's causing it! Are you on any medication for DD? I take Fybogel twice a day after meals. I never eat seeds, no popcorn, sweet corn, cut seeds out of peppers, and in cucumber and tomatoes, etc. I'm managing fine by being mindful of what I eat and no flare ups and bowel motions once every morning now, which is astonishing considering my DD, torque and narrowed sigmoid bowel! Think the Fybogel has been my saviour, thank goodness. I'm pain free now. Do try Fybogel if you don't already take it. It won't do any harm and should do you a lot of good. Let me know how things go.
