FSH Level

Hi there, my fsh level came back today and is only 9.  Doctor said this means I am not THROUGH menopause!!  I thought this test was to see if I was IN menopause and he said there is no test to say you are in PeriMenopause - I am so confused!

My FSH was below 5. My doctor said all indications say that you are in menopause . And she said the first 5 years from the start of all these problems is critical in keeping ourselves healthy as best we can . She prescriped estradiol and increased the progesterone. They are both bio identical. Also I'm taking a muiti vitamin, extra vitamin d, baby aspirin, fish oil .

    Hi Catherine

I had the blood test two weeks ago, and saw my doc, last week, and I ask if I was going through menopause, and he looked at test and just said yes I was going through menopause, and hopefully after the year without my period I should of got through the other side of this crap, my last period was march this year, but with my look at 11 mth I'll have one then start again lol..

So that's what my doc told me ...

Is there a blood test to show you are in perimenopause, like counting the estrogen or something?

Hi I'm not sure to be honest, just my doc said he'd do a blood test to see if I'm going through menopause because of the symptoms I was having, then wen I went back to see the doc, all he said was yes def in the menopause, he didn't say any thing about numbers or that, other then if I get the year without the period then that's it lol..

Nope, BECAUSE estrogen fluctuates wildly in peri. You can get your estrogen tested, but chances are, it will look fine and within normal ranges.  Blood tests in peri don't often tell you much.

Catherine, FSH levels do fluctuate throughout the cycle.  And he's right, there is no test to show perimeno. Perimeno is usually suspected with changes in your cycle, bleeding, changes in how you're feeling, some random odd symptoms or off feelings.

But typically, your FSH will be very high once you get to menopause.  I'm talking 50-120 range.  And FSH level is not high, and showing that your brain isn't screaming for more estrogen, as it does in meno.

Does that mean that even though it's only 9 I could still be in Peri.  I can't say re periods as I had a lazer eblation 10 years ago and haven't bled since.  But It's the symptoms I'm going by.  Dizziness, lethargy, loss of focus, and this horrible feeling that runs through my body that makes me want to retch.  x

Yes it does.  Look on your labs and behind or underneath your result, there will be a reference chart.  It should give you the normal reference ranges for the different phase of the cycle and a menopausal range as well.

The symptoms you describe are all peri symptoms.  All of which, can indicate a lack of either, or both, estrogen and progesterone.

Thanks so much gail annie, doc gave me hrt this morning because he thinks it's the only way to hit the symptoms, fingers crossed.

Before I start the hrt I need to ask a very personal question.  I just noticed that jelly-like secretion that appears, does that mean I am still ovulating?  I have no way of knowing because I had a laser ablation 10 years ago and haven't had a period in 10 years.  Also it was off colour.  Sorry for the details x

Yes Catherine, that jelly like secretion, which often looks like egg whites, and can be very stringy usually indicates ovulation.   In peri everything changes, cycles, length and flow, color of blood, and also our secretions.  I never noticed this jelly like secretion to any big degree, until perimenopause.  Then (sorry too much info) It came in a long string that stretched for at least 12".  Really surprised me!  But peri is the only time that happened.

Things are just changing. Hormone wise.
