I don't really want to learn to swim crawl properly as it will take a lot of time up but just wanted to just go a swim for extra exercise without hurting my knee

No they won't operate on me as I'm 50 and have had two cartilage operations and may have osteoarthritis in my knee ! I've trained all my life and just fancied adding swimming to my routine

If it's a full rupture how is it going to heal? I can't understand why they won't operate just can't leave it

Because I'm not in pain my age and it might make it worse and could lead to a knee replacement

Get an ortho's opinion. Doing anything with a self prescribed brace is a risky proposition. Don't try ad self medicate, quickest way to be permanently crippled
