full AT rupture-return to work can any one help?

hi all

it is so nice to realise i'm not alone!

I ruptured my AT in a tennis final July 31st. The Orthopeadic surgeon I saw at A&E was not really forthcoming with information/stats with regard to op/non-op treatment. Luckily my mother pinned him down by asking \"if this was your daughter what would you advise her to do?\" He said in view of my age (27) and that I wanted to play tennis again I should have surgery. Had surgery the next day.

Had cast in neutral position for 5 weeks. Then at 90 degree angle for another 4 weeks. currently 4 weeks to go. I too wasnt prepared for the pain/severe stiffness when they moved my foot to the 90 deg position.

I am concerened as to when I will be able to go back to work to full capacity (my job involves alot of standing-(optician))? Can any one advise me how long they were out for? the dr's are estimating november! Also when I can drive again? Did any one feel the need to get any additional private physio? or is this not necessary?

Would really appreciate your comments.

Good luck to everyone with their recovery. It is frustrating and a huge eye opener as to the frailties of the human body. But at least its not permanent.

    Hi. after plaster i went into a boot for 4 weeks, iwas able to go to work as I had some one pick me up and bring me home. I sit in an office and scooted around on a computer chair. As soon as the boot came off i was driving although only short distances upto about 20 mins. Also wear trainners at first as they seem to give support and help with walking. Get physio straight away as it helps with the stiffness.Good Luck Pat

    Hi Joanne.... when they moved my foot to ninty degrees I nearly fainted and I think im tough?? Not because of the pain but the shock of it...I have been replying to the stan at the top off the page so you can read of our problems there...I am also concern regarding my return to work albeit in on light duties now hobbling on crutches, my wife does not think that its a good idea... My foot is badly swollen now the cast has been removed and im now fitted with a removable ski boot for a further 2 weeks 8 weeks in all presently... Start phyio next week whopee that should be fun.. Take care and look forward to your reply.....

    Thank you for your reply. I will be having my cast removed 1st October- 9 weeks after the injury occurred. Will then be getting a walking boot for how long I'm unsure. Not sure I can go back to work until I can stand for long periods. Are you able to stand for long in the walking boot? How long after you had the boot did you start physio? Sorry for asking all these questions but the hospital department give me a different Dr every time I go in all of which give me differing answers!
