Functional Medicine for Autoimmune Disease

Has anyone seen an FM practitioner, had the tests and experienced any positive results? If so, which particular disease, how long did it take to see results, have you been able to adjust to lifestyle changes and were you able to get any of the treatment covered by insurance? Any info would be appreciated.

HI Bev
i have been seeing a functional pactitioner and have had numerous gut tests. i have tested positive for parasites and pathogens including candida and high mercury. i have cut out gluten and most sugar and dairy. i have jut started a gut clense then will go onto an antiretroviral and antimircrobial course. i have definilty found an improvement in candida and lichen sclerosis but it is still early days. (i haven't been great at cutting back the sugar). will let you know how it goes x good luck x

Thanks for your response. Are you in the UK? I am in the US, have found only one MD in my area and he is no longer accepting new patients. Having a very difficult time finding another. Prefer an MD as there is a better chance insurance will cover some of it. Did you seek out FM specifically for the LS and are you paying full cost?
I have been mostly GF,for months now, but love hearty breads and find GF bread dreadful. Sugar is not a problem for me unless you mean you are excluding fruits as well. Am lactose intolerant so I already mostly avoid that. Dark chocolate is my treat and a small amount is about all anyone would want, I think. In general I find no difference in my health. Tried this 20 years ago also with no change. But had none of the testing done.
I am very interested in hearing about your progress. Please continue to post or PM me if you prefer!

Amanda,
Am so glad you are improved w/o gluten and sugar and dairy. I guess our chemistries are all so different what works for one does not work for others. Also, I tried eliminating gluten and I actually feel worse when I do, same for a little dairy. The sugar has to go, I agree. May I ask how they tested for pathogens and parasites? A blood test? I saw a naturopath who told me I might have a long-standing virus but didn't explain why and her treatment was about $400 a month and, of course, no insurance. She did not claim wheat was all bad.
How long have you been on the clensing and are you suing a probiotic?
