Fundoplication and Hiatus hernia repair

I had the fudoplication surgery in September 2014 because I did not want to take Omeprazole for the rest of my life. The operation was a great success until September last year. I developed a very nasty cough with flu like symptoms, my doctor said it was a cold and there was nothing he could do so gave me no medication. The cough got worse and it was so bad that when I coughed I would need to sit down because I was so dizzy, i was even choking on occasions the coughing was so severe I couldn't breathe. After having a chest x-ray which was fine I saw a different GP that suggested taking Omeprazole for 8 weeks to see if it would help. The cough did clear up part from sometimes I may get a few coughs but this was not for long.  take 40mg a day and my course will finish in 2 weeks, my doctor is telling me that once the course has finished everything will be ok but I'm not convinced and I think I will have to take omeprazole all my life which is why had the operation so I wouldn't have to do this. Can anyone advise if they have experienced anything like this and what the outcome was?
