Fundoplication failure

Posted , 30 users are following.

I had a lap' Nissen fundoplication about 10 years ago. The operation changed my life. For the first time in 25 years I could eat and drink what and when I wanted.

About a year ago my original symptoms began to reappear and have got progressively worse and I I am now on 40mg omeprazole a day. I am seeing a consultant in whom I have little faith and is very young.

I am trying to find out about a "redo". Most of the information and data about redos is on american websites.

Has anyone had a fundoplication which has failed?

Has anyone had a redo?

Does anyone know of a consultant who specialises in fundoplication redos?

Thanks, Simon.

Simon, i met a new consultant this week whos based in north tyneside and he has good experience of re-do's.

I may need my fundo wrap re-doing so im not going through some tests with him to see if this is what i need. Is north tyneside too far away from you?

Hi Annette. Hope you get this. Did Liam Horgan do your redo?? I have had a redo and its failed again. I was fine for over a year taking Omeprazole 40mg but this week in a lot of pain. When I was discharged was told that north Tyneside couldn't help me anymore and I would have to go to freeman. I'm hoping it passes. Just wondering how you are. Thanks

Hi Simon, Guy Finch is a specialist based in Northampton. I believe he is a master surgeon and one of the best in the country for Nissens and re-do's. He treats NHS and private patients.

I had my Nissen's performed by him earlier this week and can highly recommend him!

    Cheers,

    Ben

      Hi,

I started my post because I am looking for lap nissen revision surgery. My original surgery changed my life but it only lasted 8 years. There is a very helpful man who posts under the name of Barrets who recommends 2 surgeons in Southhampton, I have asked to be referred to them but my local board have refused on the basis that the procedure is available locally. It would seem patient choice is "any colour you like so long as it's black".

Hello I had Nissen in June and I already have burning starting. I'm so disappointed as I thought I would be symptom free for awhile at least I was praying for that. I wish you the best if you have a redo. I'm seeking out a second opinion to see how things look and if my wrap is still in place etc. best of luck to all of you.

      Hi Ben,

I was looking through old posts, I wonder how you are getting on and whether your fundo' was a redo or first time? Also if anyone else reads this has anyone had a sucessfull and lasting redo?

      Simon.

I had original Nissen in 2010, redo in 2011 by same surgeon with major complications, redo in 2012 and now looking at another surgery as it has failed again.  Surgeons want to do a roux en y gastric bypass if insurance will approve.

I had a near total gastrectomy in January removing 90% of my stomach as well as doing a roux en y at the same time.  It was found that I had erosive gastritis and precancerous polyps as well as lots of scar tissue.  I also have a very large diaphragmatic hernia that is about the size of a grapefruit.  I have had five surgeries, different types of mesh and all have failed.  This has caused two emergency surgeries since January for obstructions from the remaining stomach and intestines herniating up into my chest cavity.  I am traveling to mayo clinic next week for a very large surgery to try and repair the defect in my diaphragm one last time.

    Hi Everyone,

I have had a re-do after my first nissen was a failure due to not being made tight enough in my surgeon's view, my second nissen was performed in Feb 2013 and straight afterwards I could feel what felt like reflux back.  I am now suffering from some reflux but a recent ENT appointment ruled out any damage to my vital esephogus but now I am feeling burning lips and sinus problems which may or may not be from acid or bile reflux as I had my gallbladder removed.

I have had bouts of gastritis which may mask my symptoms, I wish all of you the best, if you want to ask me anything go ahead after two possible failed nissens I have unfortunately experience

    Hey Guys

So I had my first Nissen in 2005, which started off a Lap surgery, but my surgeon cut my liver and spleen by accident so had to complete the Nissen open. In 2013 I started refluxing so bad again that I couldn't keep anything down and was hospitalized 4 times for dehydration and malnutrition - I lost 23kg in the space of 2 months. Needless to say a second open Nissen was done in a very complicated surgery as my stomach had pretty my grown together and the scar tissue was insane. Six months later I was refluxing again, barium swallow showed that the Nissen had slipped. I have managed to mostly control it with diet and crazy levels of Nexium. I started getting really bad a month ago, and now it's starting to effect my lungs, voice and sugar levels (yeah I am a type 1 diabetic and asthmatic to boot). The last surgeon I saw refuses to do any more work on and said I should rather find a cardiovascular thoracic surgeon as the would need to go through my chest to do the next repair - if I could find someone crazy enough to try. Has anyone else had a thoracic repair done? How did it go and so on? I am 29 and the idea of someone cutting my chest open scares me almost as much as living with this intense pain forever does.

Any feedback, advise, guidance would be so epically appreciated.
