You need some real expert advice there, if you're in the UK i would advise RNOH Stanmore. They have sorted out my shattered ceramic brilliantly. See your GP and get referred.

Hi Teresa, what a horrible thing to happen. My mother had a similar thing with the Candida fungus, it happens to less than 1% of patients. She had the hip removed and they cleared out the infection and then she had a new hip put in. It did take a while. What have they done so far? Have they tried anti fungal drugs? Did they say that you may need amputation? That would be a very, very rare situation I would have thought. The fact that you caught the problem quite quickly is also a good thing.

What is being done medically now that you are home. Which fungus was it, isolated from the environment or from your wound or both. You mention a solicitor but no medical input

I am sure it can be sorted

I had my surgery in France, no cleanliness issues but I have been left disabled due to having a 1.5” leg discrepancy which I was not expecting. I was hoping I would be able to travel but I have trouble walking now. I do feel for you, that is absolutely appalling what’s happened to you. I do hope you can get it all sorted and be able to travel once again.

That is unacceptable and on the face of it indicates that the surgeon did a really bad job. From what you have told us you will need a revision by a skilled revision surgeon. Good luck, Richard

Hi Theresa I would be definitely asking for a second opinion regarding being told you need amputation for hip infection, they can remove the prosthetic and put you an antibiotic spacer and put you on antibiotics as well to give it time be gone from your body, amputation should not be remotely considered for this unless it's progressed to gangrene and if it had you wouldn't be they are going to it would be they have.

So get yourself a new orthopaedic surgeon, also the problem with emergency surgery compared to prearranged is that if it's scheduled surgery you would be screened for many things including something as trivial as athletes foot and any water or yeast infections which would probably put a stop to your surgery till it was treated and cleared.

The hospital you are possibly going to sue wouldn't have been able to screen you with cultures etc so it's possible you had an unknown yeast infection, not saying you definitely did but it's possible

Treatment for an infected implant is as the others say. Removal of the infected implant and treatment with drugs to kill the infection. For bacteria antibiotics and for Candida and fungal infections the appropriate anti candidial or antifungal drugs. Needless to say a culture of the offending ‘bug’ with a complete identification and sensitivity pattern helps a great deal. Not essential as three real specialists have seen it all and will have a range of antimicrobials to prescribe. The important thing is to go to a specialist centre or have access to advice from one.
