GA versus Spinal. I have my right THR 2nd November

Posted , 17 users are following.

And I'm still toying with the idea of a spinal, I'm really scared as I don't want to be at all aware of any sensation, or smell or noise, is it possible to be completely out of it, eyes closed etc? If not I'll have to have GA, even though I know the recovery is better with spinal. Any info gratefully accepted.

I had a g.a, op on Friday out on Sunday. Today day 14 and all well, so worked OK for me for what it's worth.

Hi Veronica, I would go for a GaThat way you won't hear a thing.I was down for a spinal, but had a total meltdown in the pre op room!! The next thing I knew was I was back in my room, chatting to my Hubby & my Sister in law.I was sooooo terrified as I suffer with my nerves! But they wouldn't believe me! So I thought we'll just let them see me! ! And they had no choice but to knock me out for 6!!! I hope you've got a good team of carer's in place for when you come out! Please don't rush around! Don't be shy to ask for help!!!! Good luck regards Amanda

      Thanks Amanda,

I feel I may go the same way and freak out pre op.

I have husband at home, and adult kids visiting, hardest thing for me to do is sit still and do nothing!

I was told that my surgeon liked me to have a spinal and a general and that suited me fine .

i woke up with no side effects and was standing and moving about the same day .

    Lit suited me too lol

After having both knees replaced & a hip all with a spinal block with sedation I would definitely recommend this to you, my recovery was quick after the op with none of the after effects of & GA , but at the end of the day only you can decide whats best for you as some else said talk it over with your surgeon, good luck. Thanks Suzybobs,

How brave to have both knees and a hip replaced, and all under a spinal. Gosh I feel such a wimp, did you also have sedation? Did you hear anything? Are you in UK?

HI veronica yes I live i Sheffield , I heard someone talking for about the first few mins the next thing I heard was the nurse in recovery asking if I was warm enough. Yes I had sedation with the spinal block. Got to have my left hip done sometime in the future so beginning to feel like the "bionic woman" ,but I will definitely have the spinal again if possible.love Suzy x
