Gabapentin for trapped nerve

I've had a trapped nerve for 3 months now. I was prescribed gabapentin 300mg, starting on 1 a day leading up to 3 a day. I was also given 12 sessions of physio. after 10 weeks the physiotherapist told me to reduce the gabapentin slowly, which i did. Once i was off it completely and the physio stopped the trapped nerve came back with avengeance. The physiotherapist said she will refer me for a cortisone injection and am back on the gabapentin. Up to now i've been back on them for 2 weeks and am still in agony, with electic shocks an pins an needles down my arm and into my fingers. I hope the cortisone injection works because i can't cope with this pain and i am back in work next week.

why did she take you off gab? it is a slow acting drug, you may have to give it more time. It's still new to me but does seem to be working. my dose is 1-300mil in the am -2 in the pm. have been on this dose for about 2weeks. I started at 1-300 a day. I've seen no side effects. Steve

I think coz i was worried about the side affects and i seemed to be improving, which i was compered to what i was like when i first went in January. She told me to start reducing them. I am back on them now 300mg 3 x a day. But as i say up to now they aint working. Am waiting for this cortisone injection, if that doesn't work they have said they can operate on it, which obviously i don't want.

I came of it as i was more or less pain free after 2 months. I don't want to have to take them for ever. Unfortunately the trapped nerve came back after a few days of being off them. Am going back the doctors this week, see what he says. i might try taking 1 in the morning an 2 at night.

Am totally fed up now, i work in a school so am back in work tomorrow, just don't no if i can cope with the pain and working with teenagers sad

    Hi Irene

I don't know where you are from, but physiotherapists in my country are unable to prescribe or take people off prescribed medication (for a reason I imagine).

My second time on gabapentin, I found it was not as potent as the first time. Even 1800mg daily was not enough. Up to 3600mg daily is an acceptable clinical dose. Perhaps you need to see your GP to get the dose reavaluated. I think perhaps a little like you that surgery is a dramatic option to consider.

My doctor prescribed the Gabapentin, i was having physio at the hospital. I think because i was going on about the side effects, that's why she said start to redude them and see what happens. I am going back to my doctors this week, see what he says about the pain am still in.
