Gabapentin Withdrawal Horror

Posted , 180 users are following.

I want to start by giving an apology for my doubts towards patients who posted about problems with gabapentin withdrawal.  How hard could it be?  It has a short half life.  It is not an opioid.

My plan was to write about my extremely painful and unexpected withdrawal experience after I felt better, but it has been FIFTEEN months.

I was on 1800-3600 mg /day for 20 years.  My physician put me on a six day weaning schedule.  The day I took my last dose my pain skyrocketed, but the pain has changed from low back to toes pain, to pain mostly to my anterior legs below my knees.  Unfortunately, it is a very slow process.  The internal nerve shaking that accompanies the pain is beyond annoying.

I often read patients on forums stating they have no problem with gabapentin.  I did not think my problems were that terrible before I went off the drug.  They all come with cautions and potential problems.  I wish I had known of how difficult this drug was to discontinue before I had ever taken the first pill.  I wish someone had warned me.

Good luck to everyone trying to discontinue gabapentin.  I hope your experience is easier than mine.

There have been successful class action law suits going as far back as 1996. $436 billion dollars. The company sold out to Pfizer which is still manufacturing gabapentin. I don't know if maybe the original company filed bankruptcy and sold out but it goes to show losing that amount didn't stop Pfizer. It seems like they didn't even flinch. It's a slam dunk for women who were pregnant. The side effect for is children born with cleft lip. The FDA with their current war on kratom still approve thousands of meds with life threatening and life stealing side effects. I for one am filing a lawsuit of my own one for Gaba and another for seroquel which is even more harmful. There was a successful billion dollar suits for that as well.

Ten million dollars would not be enough for me to go through this another time.  Those Pfizer people should be very ashamed of themselves.  Greedy buggers!

The other issue is that doctor's are over prescribing this medication for all different reasons when in all reality it was specifically made for seizures and shingles.  Every one of my doctor's claim they have never heard any negative feedback or symptoms of withdrawal.  Big pharma really loves pushing this drug.  It has to stop.

There is also a Gabapentin page on Facebook.  So many people complaining of the same thing.  Why are we being ignored?

Pharmaceutical co.s are the biggest money makers in the U. S. To lose 146 billion in law suits and still keep making this poison? Imagine what they must make off of this one drug alone. They don't care if they ruin our lives and it's a bad drug for our kidneys too.

I am calling BULL that physicians do not know about these problems.

I complained of headache and confusion back in the mid-1990's when I first went on the drug.  When I stated these complaints to the physician, he looked at me like I had two heads and said my complaints made no sense.

Later, after years of being on gabapentin and I had +4 edema in my legs (no clinical history of cardiac problems), the doctor stated I was just fat.

After being off gabapentin since 6-13-2016 I have internal nerve shaking, extremely variable and constant moving pain and red, swollen, bloodshot painful eyes.  Over a year and a half later and I have plenty of stored pics documenting my eyes.

I am calling BULL.  The physicians out there know this is a crap drug and they do NOT CARE.  It is easy to prescribe, inexpensive and for the moment usually unregulated in the U.S.  I think Kentucky was the first to change this to a class drug.

I talked to a NYC reporter earlier this week about another medical issue (SCS-do not get me started) and brought up the idea of reporting on problems with gabapentin.  He seems like a really nice guy, but he does not seem interested in the topic.  I don't want to push the issue.  With any luck he will remember our conversation and put the idea on hold for the future.

Hi Nshealing,  i dont know if my font is as small to you as it is to me but its very tiny and i cant seem to change it...sorry.  ANYWAY!  lol  Yes, they are over prescribing it for just about any cause and even pushing the "add more" to your dosage if it doesnt seem to work.  Thats where i am.  I get ulcers on the sides of my tongue ...sometimes 10 at a time.....and have for over 2 yrs now so they are calling it neuropathy, numbness on bottom of feet,  pain in upper neck out to shoulders and down to elbows that will not let up at all.   nor does the gaba help it.  SO...ive only been on it for about 6 mths, and decided if  im taking 2400mg a day and i started at 600 a day.and still hurt, its time to ditch this. No point in taking something that only helps a teeny bit....which it did seem to help at first.  So i get on the computer to find out how to wean off this and i am directed to this site over and over and i see all these people trying for the same thing....i read a few and my, my God, my heart sinks,  surely not, i had NO idea.  Now, Im scared.  OH btw, does gaba cause weight gain. Ive gained 30lbs but ive also been on a steriod and i know that caiuses gain.....Now, im afraid and dont know what to do.  I have had all the pain in this 67 year old body I can stand and Ive done it without opiods.  I live In WV which is the highest addiction state there is. If you even look like you might ask for one, they kinda start treating you different.  Well, Im ready for an opiod!!!! not 3600mg of gagb.  well, im just rambling. sorry.  What is happening to me right now is im forgetting things and here is the strange thing.....in the evening im sitting on the sofa watching tv and  I , with a sudden jerk, wake up in another place in the room.  I dont remember falling asleep but its only been about 20mins.  and when i come to, its with a startle.  Im afraid Im going to wake up in my car.

Wow! That is extreme. Yesterday I didn't take my second of 3 daily doses. I could not sleep and my face was beet red and my skin actually felt raw. They give me 400 mgs of seroquel to help me sleep and I take melatonin on top of that. I'm going to try again today. If you ask me, and I've stated this before, I was on fentanyl and stopped taking that on my own. The sick only lasted a week tops. A few yrs later they gave me gabapentin and lied to me about the addiction and on top of that erectile dysfunction. Doctors are afraid of the Govt crackdown on opiates. I don't want those either. You can bet your bottom dollar these governors and congressmen can get opiates if they get hurt. They are such hypocrites. I can't even get them to write a script of benzos to help ween me off. They will just try to put me in their rehab. They get you addicted to things and their rehab is always full. What a "hamster wheel" off bulls**t. Anyway, I'm getting side tracked. If you can stop now, just do it. I've been on gaba since 2008. I always tell people on methadone to stop and that they are crazy. To tell you the truth I would rather go through a methadone sick that this life stealing drug. Good luck to you.

Kentucky just made gabapentin a schedule 5 drug. Schedule 5??? It should be schedule 2 at least. And there are people overdosing on it there as well. People who are addicted to opiates use it so their withdrawals won't be as severe. Now you know why the FAD is trying to take kratom off the market. Big Pharma wants to to take drugs like gabapentin and they are losing millions of dollars a month to kratom benders. GREEDY IS RIGHT! It's the same with marijuana. In some states it is legal but the federal govt. Does not recognize the legality. Such hypocrites.

I lived in Kentucky and went to the Va. Hospital in Tennessee. They gave me 20 mgs. Of valium a day for 2 years. They worked great and felt normal. When I moved to Pennsylvania I went to the Vs. And asked them to fill my valium the Doctor said "we don't do that here" but they don't mind ruining my life with gabapentin! All this war on drugs is to make politicians look good and forcing people to look to the never ending drug trade on the streets. It reminds me of the failed Alcohol prohibition. You know it's going to make street level gangsters rich. This country would rather lose a war than admit a mistake. They are constantly trying to look good to the people here and the world at any cost.

i dont know about making them richer because trump is going to give them the death sentence. ha ha.  yeah, sorry about your valium.  I hope i dont have to have surgery and them say, 'Oh, dont worry that we cut your abdomen open, we'll give you gabapentin for pain!"  I THINK NOT.  lol  its crazy. well, good luck my friend.
