Gallbladder is gone so where is this pain from?

HI

Had the dreaded gallbladder removed last June after only 7 months of pain (so I'm pretty lucky).

Everything went well, home the same day - took a good 4 weeks to feel totally better after the op but eating was ok and I don't seem to be affected by bowel issues like some people.

Only problem is I have dull ache in exactly the same place I used to get the gallbladder pain. It's not intense pain but it's in the front RUQ under my ribs and moves round the side and to my back.

It doesn't seem to appear after anything in particular and most of the time it's there constantly. Suppose it's more of an annoyance than anything else because I'm always aware of this ache. I'm quite reluctant to go to my GP because after spending about 7 months constantly in the surgery last year updating painkillers and nausea pills I don't want them to think I'm addicted to medical attention.

Just wondered if anyone had anything similar or if it's just a by-product of surgery that I'll have to get on with?

Thanks

Wow - thanks for helping me realise there are still issues long after gallbladder removal.

I have been woken up with severe pain on my top left side under the ribcage.  Add bloating and burping and a bit of acid reflux and it set me off down the anxiety path of finding too many causes to the sypmptoms!  I think partly due to overeating the other day, plus too hot summer and I vegetated indoors.  Now back to walking lots - and then this starts!  Just waiting to hear from doc.  Poor tum can't cope with digesting so much like it used to!  Or I may have caused a blockage somewhere as I wear a bag that is strapped round my stomach/hips (can't do backpack due to shoulder injury) and it has everything including the kitchen sink!  So much reflecting on how and what I must not do.

On the plus side it's only at night and not in the day - just like before the operation, although I have a burning sensation that's relatively mild.  My doc knows I have a very high pain threshold so I think he may be more inclined to help when I tell him that on a scale of 10 - to me it was 11.

With regard to sludge in the gall bladder, an aquaintance had to be rushed to hospital with suspected heart attack - immediate gallbladder removal found sludge.

A neighbour also had the heart attack hospital trip - he had a huge and very weird shaped - stone.  Quite pointed in places - he was delighted to show me!

Hope those anecdotes help with others worried with similar issues - they all seem to be so different - even down to timescales.

i had my gallbladder removed 1 month ago, suffered from the attack as soon as potassium drip disconnected from me, doctor want me to take fluid/food oral by mouth.. since then, every attack last for several days, every food is your enemy, my stomach bloat, esophagus ring loosen and letting the acid reflux to my throat, damaging my throat, having back pain, pain under right rib, pain at gallbladder area, pain in the bowel at random location, when it get worse, i can feel the pain at my appendix area, at my right thigh.. after series of complains, doctor gave me domperidone 10 mg tablet, Augmentin (amoxycillin + clavulanate potassium), Ranitidine 150mg, Antacid Tablet (AL + Mg + Simethicone).. After consuming 'em for a day or two, all the pain gone, whenever all the medicine out of stock, the attack comes back.. seems like the given medicines only to prevent you from getting stomach bloat that will trigger other series of pain… long before my gallbladder surgery, a 14mm lymph node spotted at my pancreas body, getting bigger and bigger up to 21mm and doctor suggested gallbladder removal is the only way to stop the swollen lymph node, then after the gb removal, my condition getting worst.. i do believe, after all the experience I get, I might have pancreatitis but doctor keeps on denying the possibility that I have pancreatitis. From now on I have to rely on good diet, stay away from fat, cholesterol, red meat, and things that can make you bloat and never stop taking my medicine. So for my bad English..

Good to see I'm not alone, 3 years must be a mile stone for most of us it seems. I had my gallbladder taken out years ago but at about the 3 year mark I started have pains and had joked in my head that maybe my Dr didn't really take it out cuz why would I continue to have pain like this if he had really removed it ( I know he really did) anyways I've lived with this pain off and on for YEARS, then in March (2016) I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and when ever it's active and I can't poop I've noticed that the (no )gallbladder pain and my diverticulitis are in the same spot., makes me wonder just how long my diverticulosis was brewing before it became diverticulitis and just got written off as being constipated? Anyone else have there gallbladder removed and later have these phantom GB pains that years later ended up having diverticulitis, Just wondering? Would be interested in reading the feedback on my little theory, especially since none of us were really provided with an answer as to why we're still having these pain. Looking forward to reading some replys soon. Take care.

Hi, I didn't know diverticulitis could be felt as pain as high up as the GB site. That surprised me.

I put some of my own pain down to the constant drip of bile irritating my colon.

BTW Do you follow a special diet for your condition? :-)

Hi from the US here I'm facing Similar issues. I thought I was having a heart attack today. Gallbladder has been gone about 8 months any further advise you can share?

I'm so glad I came across your post. Apparently there are a lot of us with the same symptoms. My gb has been out for 5 years.

I'm having another attack. All tests normal two months ago. I'm trying to slam water without getting more nauseous. And I like the tennis ball idea - may try that too.

Do anyone's palms get oddly itchy? And feel really tired?

    Humaning...the struggle is real.

I had loose stone removed and spent 10 days in hospital as they caused Pancreatitus. 6 wks later had gallbladder removed. After recovering for 3 days ended up in hospital again for 11 days and had to have a drain put in due to an infection. Total night mare. Now if I eat too much or fatty food it goes really tight across belly button and above and below swells, goes rock hard and is very painful. Don't know to see Dr or just stop eating fatty food completely and smaller portions. Getting fed up now as been 7 months.

Same situation with me. Not terrible pain but enough to be aware of. After major blood work, ultra sound, cat scan and endoscopy my GI doctor said if is not getting worse that is a good thing and that it is probably just scar tissue from my surgery.

If your Doc thinks its scar tissue causing the pain, google "Stretching for abdominal adhesions". I've been doing some stretching and rolling around on a small exercise ball for the last 3 months and I've really noticed a difference in my pain! Maybe also read about Abdominal Wall Syndrome and see if that pertains to you. I hope this helps!

Was interesting to see others have shared my experiences, thought I was

alone. Had gb removed 40 yrs ago, 22 yrs ago pain returned.

Just got over another attack yesterday, lasting 17 hrs.

Does anyone know how to stop these attacks once they begin ?

Home remedy maybe. I take aspirin and other pain meds, but doesn't

seem to help. Just end up pill sick on top of the severe pain.

    Hi,

My daughter had the surgery last year but she is still having all the symptoms she had prior to the surgery. the pain is unbearable some days and not even water will stay in her stomach. Some days she can eat an apple without any problem and the next pain she gets diarreah and pain.

Last week she had severe dirraeah whenever she drank water. Didn't matter what type.

Any help woul dbe greatly appreaciated. She has seen several different GI doctors in the last year and no one can give us an answer. Plus she is gaining rapid weight

Another comment here I saw the other day was was about using a tennis ball below the breast,

rolling it around the area on the inner rib. The person suggested lying down on your stomach to perform this

but I found doing it while sitting worked for me. Also on the back in the same general area as the front.

After I was here the other day.I had another attack starting, I tried it and it immediately stopped.

Not sure if it was a coincidence or not, I just know it stopped immediately.

Have her see a dr that specializes in a condition called MALS. Same symptoms as my daughter. It's caused by the nerves and maybe an artery being pinched after the surgery.i took my daughter to the Cleveland clinic.. they diagnosed her in a few hours. A few weeks later they did laproscopic surgery and resolved her issue. The pain and other symptoms come because when you eat, it has the extra weight in your stomach. Because the surgery can involve a tendon, it pulls on those nerves and an artery that supplies blood to the lower abdomen. Not sure exactly what they do to fix it. But cured my daughter. They can also try a nerve block first

Have your daughter go to a GI dr who specializes in MALS. It comes from a ligament that tightens around nerves and the artery to the lower abdomen. My daughter had the same long term symptoms as yours.

I took My daughter to Cleveland clinic. They diagnosed it quickly. She had laproscopic surgery to relieve the problem. They can also try a nerve block. What happens is the ligament tightens around nerves and the artery to the lower abdomen. When you eat or drink, the weight I'm your stomach pulls slightly on the nerves and artery, and the nerve pain is excruciating. She is eating and gaining weight back. Her pain is now gone after she has healed
