Gallbladder removal

Hi, I had keyhole surgery on 2/2/2018 (just over 3 weeks ago) to remove my gallbladder. Every thing went well, I have been able to eat what I like from day one (although I haven’t tried spicy food) haven’t had any nausea or diarrhoea. However I do have a problem....every day I get this gargling feeling in my tummy , I can feel wind and hear noises (the kind of noises you hear when you’re hungry) I feel like if I could burp the wind up, then everything would be ok but I can’t seem to bring this wind up.                         Before gallbladder removal, I went on a diet and lost 7st2lb of weight through diet, I have put 7lb back on already and don’t want to put all my weight back on so have been trying to get back on my diet but this gargling hungry feeling is making me break the diet every time I try. Does anyone else get this gargling & starving feeling? If so does anyone know what to do to help it go?         I’m trying to stick to 1500 calories per day but my body is asking for 4000, per day.

Be very careful eating fat free foods. They are loaded with sugar. Fruit has a lot of sugar but it is natural sugar. I had surgery 5 months ago but I still am super careful about what I eat. I try to have what I call real meals, ie salad, chicken, extra lean pork or fish and freshveggies. The in between my real meals I have good snacks, ie fruit, nuts, anything that is multi grain bread or crackers with cheese that is low in fat. Also graham crackers are low in fat and sugar and very filling especially with a lower fat whipped peanut butter. Also good on apples. I have eaten red meat in over 25 years. Red meat is very hard to digest and has a considerable amount of fat. I substitute white meat ground chicken or turkey for burgers, chilli, pasta sauce, or anything that requires ground beef.  You will have to be creative with spices to add extra flavor or if I M browning it I sprinkle in beef flavored bouillon and that really makes whatever I am cooking awesome.

My problem now is I still have grumbling lower but and nausea and diarrhea about 75% of the time no matter what I eat. My internist said it has a lot to do with the fact that my gallbladder was a mess as I waited toooo long to have it removed.

Eat 6 meals a day, drink plenty of water or iced tea or hot tea, no milk or fat free milk works fine with cereal or in puddings, take a good multi vitamin and try to walk every day or at least 4 times a week, don’t stroll, walk fast, but start slow and work up distance and speed weekly. I usually carry 3 to 5 lb hand weights or ankle weights. You’ll be surprised how much better you will feel. If the weather is bad I go to the larger enclosed shopping malls so I can keep my routine.

I have no idea how much a Stone is in pounds but you have worked hard to get weight off so don’t let it sneak back on. The older you get the harder it is to lose. I’m 5’ 4” , I weight 114 lbs  and am 68 yrs old so if my jeans or any of my clothes get a little tight I tend to get it off QUICK.

Just be patient with your tummy and be proud of yourself.  Good luck and keep me posted. Wanda

Thank you for replying. I have a feeling that the reason for all the gargling in my tummy, was the fact that I was drinking too many fizzy drinks, I have cut out fizzy drinks for the past two days and also cut out bread & wheat and feeling a lot better . The gargling and all the wind has gone but I am still more hungrier then usual.  You mentioned red meat in your comment .... I had steak for dinner, that was about a week after my gallbladder removal and I suffered reflex acid for the rest of that evening, I’m too scared to try another steak , I am going to wait a couple of months before trying red meat again.  I have made an effort to eat proper food today, I ate roast chicken with fresh cabbage & mash potatoes for dinner. Fish fingers for lunch and porridge for breakfast. Problem I’m going to find is that I haven’t got time to cook fresh veg every day so will have to buy frozen veg for some of the days.  I seriously believe it was either the wheat or the fizzy drinks that was causing all that gargling & wind. Have you tried cutting out wheat for your problems? I must admit I’m going to find it hard if I can not eat bread!                                                      Thank you for your reply again & hope your problems get better too .

Alabama, frozen veg is absolutely fine- just as good as fresh and often it is cheaper to use it.

Try a mashed banana in your porridge for breakfast or raisins, pinch of cinnamon and teaspoon of maple syrup also grated apple with sultanas is good.  You could try defrosting frozen blueberries with banana too. If I start the day with porridge, I can last until lunch without feeling hungry.

Jacket potatoes instead of sandwiches make a good lunch and are readily available in many places. Or try a filling soup for lunch- you can use frozen veg or buy a ready made soup.

Chicken, turkey and fish with vegetables or salad are fine for dinner. You are doing so well - especially coming off the fizzy drinks. Maybe try a 0% fat yogurt or fruit for dessert or sugar free jelly with fruit set in it- doesn’t have to be fresh fruit as canned or frozen are just as nutritious. It’s a big change to make but you’ve taken the first steps. Eating like this, you shouldn’t put weight on. It’s healthy food. New guidelines from NHS are suggesting a calorie intake of 400 at breakfast, 600 at lunch, 600 at dinner plus 2 x 100 calorie snacks, so 1800 in total. Not sure yet if that’s to maintain weight or for a slow loss.

Anyway keep up the good work and hopefully you’ll soon be on the mend. X

I would think that fizzy drinks were causing your gas and rumbling tummy. Wheat bread and rolls and cereal were recommended in all the list I have seen for a diet after gallbladder surgery. As a matter of fact that is all I have eaten. I wouldn’t worry so much about the wheat as I would the steak. Eating 6 meals a day should help with your hunger problem. I know how this has been so depressing for all of us. We all felt so bad, thought having gallbladder out would solve the problem only to end up feeling worse after the procedure. I have had to have 2 IV infusions of 750 mg of iron each because I just wasn’t eating and everything I ate went in my mouth and immediately came out the other end.  As far as veggies, frozen are fine. You do sound like you are getting things under control. Keep me updated on your progress.

Thank you for replying. Think you are right. I have started eating wheat again and don’t seem to have a problem at the moment. I have cut out fizzy drinks altogether and drinking squash & water & coffee. Feeling good atm so fingers crossed I will stay normal.                                 Sorry you have been having problems, I do hope the iron infusions work for you .
