Gallbladder Removal (Dry Heaves, Dizzy, Fatigued, Low Appetite)

I had gallbladder surgery 5 weeks ago on June 8, 2018. I have been constantly a little dizzy since the surgery,  I was getting very fatigued but that seems a little better now but I still don't have the energy I had before the surgery.  I am now somewhat shaky too.  I also have little appetite and get dry heaves If I'm late on a meal.  Sometimes the dry heaves happen after meals too.  I went back to work but I'm really struggling.  I now have anxiety which I've never had in my life.  I weigh about 200lbs, I'm 46 years and was very healthy before the surgery.  My BP runs around 115/70, my A1C is 5.4.  I have done every blood test under the sun, the only issue was that my Vitamin D was 20.4 and my B12 was 323.  I'm taking supplements for that and also have just started a probiotic.  I have not lost much weight as I force feed myself.  My stools are about 50% loose and 50% diarrhea.  It is a big struggle for me to get 2000 calories a day without eating fat.  I'm beginning to wonder if I will ever recover.  I'm the worst in the morning but I get better as the day progresses.  I usual am pretty functional around 3pm.  I'm not seeing many people's storys of complete recovery on here.  Perhaps they loose interesting in the forum after they recover.  The dizziness is driving me insane.  I think I'm getting better with the fatigue.  Has anyone had my symptoms; Dizziness, Fatigue, Loss of Appetite, Dry Heaves and gotten better?

Thanks, Ken

Don't push yourself as five weeks is still early.  Don't do any heavy lifting.  And the kind of fat you should eat is avacado, olive oil, coconut oil (or milk); nuts - almonds, salmon, eggs, olives.  Eat alot of those foods. I put those oils on sliced turkey and add pumpkin seeds - and only felt good for a long time eating those foods.

I'm a year from my surgery and just fyi - your stools will be like that I think the rest of your life. Sometimes loose, sometimes diarrhea.  It is a struggle.  I wish I didn't have to have my gallbladder out.  And I tell everyone now, if at all possible, keep your gallbladder.

I would also keep a food / weight  log and write down everything and how you feel afterwards.  Keep it for a month or so, and then you can take it to your doc - maybe see a nutritionist?

Hi KEN. I had all of your symtoms before gall removal. After the surgery I was feeling fine. A month later I was rush to ER complaining about nausea dry heaves and just generally not feeling up to par. They ct scanned me found that I have a stone stuck in common bile duct. I had a procedure done called ERCP. After that was in hospital for a week recovering. So 8 months after that I am finally able to eat and gain weight. Check on that possible obstrution in ducts. Sorry hope you get help.

Hi Ken, I know how you feel I had surgery little over 3 weeks ago and I'm having some of the same things you are I have lost 10lbs that was mainly the first 2 weeks after surgery I'm eating but nothing fatty so not expecting to gain weight fast.

My stomach is all messed I'm mainly constipated with gas pain. I have good days and bad. I'm feel weak as well but I'm trying different foods now and I'm walking on the treadmill 25 mins a day to get my stamina back.

Every one is different I have read where it can take months. I was feeling better before I had surgery also but it's done now. I wake up every morning feeling nauseous as the day goes on it gets a little better. How are probihotics working? I have not tried that yet. I have been taking peppermint pills for nausea and gas x.

I'm having a endoscopy and colonoscopy done in a week and half just to rule out stuff. My whole digestive system is all messed up since I had GB surgery.

    Keep in touch feel better.

I think we are all messed up after GB surgery!  Would be interested to hear your results after the endoscopy.  I had a colonoscopy just a few months ago and besides a polyp, i'm fine.

Yes I'm having one done in a little over week. Both upper and lower also I was diagnosed about a year and half ago with my mesinteruc artery is about 70% blocked just had another CT scan and no change still the same which is weird because one it usually happens more elderly people 60 and older and two my heart is fine had CT on it last year no calcium anywhere else . Heart is wide open .

I'm not scared of food as they people are with blockage down there. It's been there for a year and half it has not gotten worse and I'm eating and not hurting 30 mins to hour later which is a sign of artery blockage in your digestion.

So with gallbladder out now I think the problem is more in the stomach itself or intestine. I guess we will see in a week !

    Hi Ken and folks

I put a reply on another post earlier, I had my GB out 3 weeks ago due to non functioning and I have to say I am very disappointed that my digestive systems seems much worse than ever!! I ate a low fat diet for the past three years, no pastry, chips, cakes etc, etc. I feel very depressed now having gone through the surgery and still no sign of improvement, still in pain , but can't be bothered to go back to dr's anymore, tests never show anything, feeling down as I can"t see an end to all this! Hope you feel better soon.

Sorry Ken, I failed to mention that I to get very dizzy after eating, even sometimes just a drink, Dr not interested, I guess some things are not explainable, no amount of cider vinegar, aloe Vera or probiotics make a difference.

      Hi Joanna

I'm not a doctor so I may be wrong, but dizzy and weak sounds similar to 'dumping syndrome' which could be your body adjusting to the new way of digesting your food. Are you eating several small meals instead a fewer big ones?

My husband had to have a gastrectomy and gets this. His surgeon said it was dumping syndrome. He was told to eat small and often.

I know this is an old discussion, but I am interested if anyone found relief from all their symptoms after gallbladder surgery from almost two years ago. I had mine removed five weeks ago, and I am having a lot of the same symptoms. It has been very difficult to stay positive, and I am going to a new doctor tomorrow, because my old doctor suggested in so many words (and a gesture) that my symptoms could be all in my head. I did not feel great before my surgery, but I would take it over how miserable I feel almost on a daily basis after surgery.

      Hi Ken

I just posted my own situation along the same lines as you. 7 weeks post-op and the same as you, I almost can't believe I had the gallbladder out as I'm almost the same as before the surgery. I'm sitting here typing with the pressure in my rib cage like before the surgery. I get bored with steamed veggies so today I tried Applegate farms grassfed turkey slices (no preservatives, etc.) Just a few slim slices. Less than an hour later bad diarrhea and hour after that the rib cage pressure.

Between feeling the world is falling apart from this strange virus and being physically sick, totally bummed. I guess we have no recourse except to comfort eachother and take one day at a time. We're told it will get better, It Must....

Hello . Hope I can help you. Its only been 7 weeks. May I suggest a little tip for you. When you do crave meats try maybe fish or meat that has less fat content. And just try a bite or two. You need to slowly introduce you body to fats. Don't eat that much fats at one time. This works for me. Try baking veggies And fish. Baked chicken is safe and should be patted down to soak up excess fats. Hope you the best.

    HI ,

I am on day 3 after GB removal and umbilical hernia repair on Friday. (Probably not the wisest thing to agree to with this COVID19 happening and at my age 74, however I am fit and young for my age with no under lying health issues. )

I wasn't given much advice on what to expect after and I wonder if my symptoms are 'normal' for post GB surgery...

DAY 1 Not much appetite, sipped water and peppermint tea and ate baked potato and baked beans and small piece of chicken breast, cup of decaf tea - bloating and solid stomach and no bowell opening. Felt not too bad otherwise. Cocodomol before bed.

DAY 2 Very good appetite - porridge made with water and fruit, decaf tea and coffee and sipped peppermint tea all day with ginger in. Rice and spicy veggie vegan dish later, very bloated and full of gas, Evening half baked potato and beans again. still bloated and painful under my ribs and no bowell opened so took lactulose and senna. No painkillers and not felt too bad. walking about but still resting and sleeping lots.

DAY 3 Bowells opened and stools perfect, had to go many times but, no diarrhoea! I thought hey i'm doing fine. Very good appetite... ate same, porridge and fruit. Small piece of chicken breast. Half baked potato and and baked beans. tea with low fat milk and biscuits... walking about but resting lots

DAY 4 woke up needing loo... SEVERE diarrhoea and sat on loo shivering and nauseous...

IS THIS THE START OF WHAT TO EXPECT ........?

wow you are eating quite a lot of food. are you eating large meals? You shouldn't. Don't overload your system. If you do it will cause alot or problems. For instance beans are good but not beans with syrup or a lot of sugar. Try regular beans. Is the chicken you eat baked or fried? Remember the slightest amounts of oil will cause watery stools. Try eating less at one sitting. Take it easy for you are overloading your digestive system. I find if I Eat less in better off.

fernando90225. Thank you so much for your advice. yes i guess i was eating so much and taking the laxatives probably wasn't a good idea, but i felt so full and bloated and so much pressure under my ribcage I just wanted to free the pressure. I am now eating small meals and often (not a whole potato, just half and a few spoonfulls of beans) I really wasn't given much advice on leaving hospital. Just don't eat fats and eggs! No further advice other than try to have a 15 min walk a day and build it up, and no 48 hour follow up call from hospital that I was promised. I guess they are busy preparing for COVID 19 patients, so must not complain. I am surprised though as I had it done at a BMI private hospital - under the NHS and to be honest i expected it to be cancelled but the hospital was very quiet.

Anyway, my body seemed to settle down by mid morning and I was able to eat in the evening and so far I am okay. I even went for a 15 minute walk today with the dog round the empty roads. I was advised to do that by the nurse and it complies with gov guideline of lockdown.

So glad I found this thread. Thank you again.
