My gastroenterologist gave me a prescription for Ursodeoxycholic acid tablets and I took them for 6 months of an evening with meal as suggested and my gallstones with horrendous symptoms were reduced from cholesterol stones of 17mm with five smaller ones accompanying it to 10mm and one other small stone.

My GP's would not give me the Ursodeoxycholic acid tabs and used an excuse by saying they might not work! This was contrary to the eminent surgeon writing to me stating yes Ursodeoxycholic acid treatment WILL dissolve gall stones.

I had an important reason for not wanting the knife because I had already that year had a sizable cut below my navel that took three months getting right the same year.

I have not had recurring symptoms in any case for two years + and if I did I have a letter from that 'thinking' surgeon that advises = If you need to have more of the same please ask and I would be please for you to renew the treatment. I must add that a few months ago I felt a twinge under my right ribs so renewed the treatment for a couple of months and hence had no problem thereafter.

I have heard some scare stories from some who say -----ah they come back 'you know'..........

Well that may be so but why then do I not take what is possible in respect that a low dose of Ursodeoxycholic acid can be taken to prevent gall stones forming in those who are susceptible

to stones forming? Incidentally Urso is given to patients who have types of Cirrhosis duie to 'it helping them. I do not know the technicalities of that but I do know that Urso dissolved my stones. I did not have any adverse symptoms while 'on it' either. My surgeon said it seems to have suited you admirably and I am very pleased with that outcome. So please research it because it seems to be near to 'natural ' re increasing the acid level in the gall bladder.

I wonder why this practice is used in the USA far more than here in the UK?

This is good to know I was prescribed this medication i started taking it but then it made me sick, headaches etc, but I am perimenopausal so that doesn't help either so not sure whether it's above symptoms or perimenopause, also have a dull aching pain today on right side but thats probably what I consumed last night which was takeaway better get back onto my diet! can I ask how bad were your symptoms when you started taking the medication?

My symptoms were diabolical. I had bloating wind and was dreadfully sick. all these symptoms occurred about an hour or so after my evening meal.

This went on for a few months but the vomiting was late on in the process.

Of course I had right sided pain under my ribs and I could feel my gall bladder was swollen.

I saw an eminent lymphoma specialist who confirmed it was my gall bladder I could 'feel' with my fingers when breathing out. This was before seeing the lady gastro registrar who told me she had never heard of Urso. She also told me to get rid of stones removal of the gall bladder is the only way. That surprised me due to seeing the dissolution of gall stones is practiced widely in the USA. She said wrongly she was an expert in every way re gall bladders.

I am wary of anyone who does not know their profession as they should.

It should never occur that a patient is more knowledgeable than the carer.

Anyone however is capable of a mistake but in the medical profession very few admit their mistakes because of being sued! This fact was told to me by another hematology registrar but of course he was not the run of the mill doctor but an astute and truthful one which I felt was creditable.

It would be a pity if the urso does not suit you because it worked very well indeed for me. My story is truthful in every respect. I feel it is appalling that gall bladders are removed when they could be saved by dissolution of the stones provided they are cholesterol type and on the proviso it does not adversely affect the patient when taking the urso. I was prescribed 650mg

TD but was not told I could 'space the dose out' when apparently one can do that. It would be right to consult the directions re side effects?

I was told i had to have my gall bladder removed immediately, just hours after an Emergency room visit at the hospital, because of a blockage & infection in my gall bladder so i has no time to try alternatives. I would have much rather tried the medication that you've suggested, yet in my case perhaps that was not possible. The surgeon told me that gall stones can still develop even though the gall bladder is now gone due to my surgery. Do you know if a gall stone re develops after gall bladder surgery removal, if the medicine you've mentioned would still work to dissolve it/them? I still have pains in the area where my gall bladder was located, & its been 3 years after surgery. This pain is on & off & is annoying yet tolerable. If I find out I have stones again, I'd like to tell my GI Doctor about the medicine you have suggested, as I surely do not want to have to go through that surgery again. What a pleasure it is to learn & hear from you in the UK about your medical experiences and your terrific information! Thank you so much from the USA! And Best wishes to you.

Thank you for that. I personally did not have any adverse symptoms at all and two courses of Urso eradicated my gall stones. A specialist gastro should be able to confirm what is and what is not right for you.

I found through research that the USA are very educated in Urso. Surely there are doctors in the USA who are extremely experienced with Urso.

It was a USA doctors article that confirmed that when he was a registrar his superior (surgeon) mostly recomended 'out' with thew gall bladder! later with more experience he noted that many of 'his' patients got rid of gall stones by dissolution technique. He also commented on the ones he saw who had had their gall bladders removed and thought =shame I didn't mention this other way of curing the sufferer of gall stones rather than just get it out!

I had very serious reasons for choosing to try Urso. When a patient is over 70 it has been stated that they may not survive an operation by 10%. Plus another 10% less chance of surviving an operation if they already have an

existing health problem (not specified)! As well as that please sign this document waiving any mistake that 'may be' made during the 'removal' procedure! No thanks only if the situation has got to take place.

It is well documented that taking urso 'helps' cirrhosis sufferers who have been prescribed that acid tab to be taken on doctors orders.

For 'my' surgeon to say that it is a horrible way to eliminate gall stones must have come from his experience but I was most definitely not one of the unfortunate ones who had side effects. I have taken Cipro for a month and again not had any adverse symptoms & yet some want that antibiotic banned. Without that antibiotic I would not be here writing this post.

      Dear Micklemus,

thank you for your very helpful information.

Indeed, i have used ursodeoxycholic acid tablets and i totally agree with your opinion. I used them when i had gallbladder attacks (approximately 4 years ago). Since then, i never had an attack, although i have to admit that i am not sure if the gallstones were completely dissolved or not, but the symptoms were not presence anymore.

Thus, now after 4 years, i still have the gallstones but i haven't experience gallstone attacks. On your opinion, should i go with the treatment of with ursodeoxycholic acid or surgery?

      Kindly,

      Albenc

My second course of Ursodeoxycholic acid tabs at 650mg per day got rid of all my terrible symptoms totally. I only took it for 2 months. The first course ran 6 months and dissolved all but two stones one of which was small enough to have passed. I have a suspicion that the last stone 'passed' when it too was small enough. I think it is imperative to be ultrasounded to keep under observation in both out cases and especially if you have ANY symptoms.

When a patient is taking Urso they should also be tested for liver function. That is a patients right and the doctors responsibility to look after a gall bladder patient on medication......... One thing is for sure and is confirmed by my eminent Gastrologist/surgeon is that Urso will dissolve gall stones.

He told me that because they suited me I was to resume the treatment if I felt the need. He would also give me a new script if I asked for one.

GP's I am sorry to say are not so experienced with Urso as him and no doubt many so called specialist as well. The mind boggles!
