Gallstones op - how long to recover?

Posted , 1 user is following.

I am finally getting my op in a couple of weeks and can't wait - you will all know about the pain, the vomiting, the restricted diet....

One question - how soon will I be doing normal stuff again - some have said 2 weeks, some longer. The hospital gave me a date in the school holidays when my partner is away (thanks guys) so I have to sort childcare. How many days have people needed in bed, how soon before you were up &, for instance, cooking meals, how soon before I can walk my kids to school - a mile round trip etc etc I know it differs from person to person but some guidelines from your experience would be really helpful so I know how many days to draft friends in for. Thanks

Hi, haven't had mine done yet but a friend had hers done via keyhole last year. she was up and very slowly moving about the next day but was very uncomfortable. I think 2 weeks is an average to be back to normal, meaning painfree and getting back to driving etc, from what i saw with my friend the first 4 days were the worst.

    Hi

I am waiting to have mine done as well. I have heard that about 2 weeks is the norm as well, apparently the gas that they pump you up with is the worst part about it, it is supposed to give you a lot of pain in your shoulders, but lets face it after putting up with gallbladder pain we should be used to it!!!! :D

    Hi

I had my op on Friday and was sent home on Saturday afternoon. I haven't had that much pain but am very sore and am now experiencing trapped wind (I think) which feels like a massive stitch. I can do minor things but am receiving a lot of help. I have 2 small children and keep paniking every time they come near me in case they jump on my sore tum! I think I should be OK after a week but as you said everyone is different...

Good luck - it's not too bad, especially after the pain from the gallstones!
