Hey,

I experience occasional dizziness. Is it connected to my IBS gas, bloating and full feeling?

Hmm doesn't sound true of IBS? Get that seen to separately!

I used to worry a lot about my IBS symptoms, one of which is being feeling dizzy, lightheaded and/or faint. However, after speaking to numerous IBS sufferers it does seem to be a symptom that a lot do experience. Only yesterday I woke feeling fine, needed to have a bowel movement quite early, but just before breakfast I started to feel strange, lightheaded and faint, a little while later I started to get abdominal pain, and felt quite poorly for the next 6 or so hours, it was only until mid afternoon that things started to ease, and I felt human again.

I was told by a doctor that the digestive system has a vast and complex array of nerve endings, and if these are 'out of sync' as he put it, and is thought to be why we experience IBS, it can lead to a whole host of other, unrelated symptoms due to mixed messages to the brain. I thought to myself 'yeah right', and believed it was more of a mechanical problem with the digestive system, a part not working, a part blockage, something like that. However, stress can play an important part in how our IBS reacts, and stress is a state of mind, so maybe my doctor was right?? He called it 'referred symptoms', which is where a problem in one part of the body causes what seems to be a totally unrelated symptom in another part.

Don't forget as well, if you bloat a lot, as I do, bloated areas of your digestive system will increase in size and will likely push against other organs, bones and nerves in your body, which in turn will affect their normal operation. Also, if you do have IBS, it is likely food isn't being digested as it should, and you could be lacking in certain vitamins and minerals.

There are many reasons why IBS can cause dizziness, I'm not say that any of these are the cause of your dizziness, just that it could well be, but if in doubt, always go and see a doctor.

Hi, I have experienced a dizzy, kind of "out of it" feeling with my IBS-

especially during an IBS attack. However, a lot of the time I can attribute this with my anxiety that comes with this condition. Once I am able to relax myself, I can feel the dizzy feeling start to fade.

Does the dizziness spark the anxiety or is it the other way round? Anxiety will definitely trigger IBS, which could make other symptoms worse. Have you asked your doctor for help with the anxiety. Maybe that will help?

Anxiety due to my IBS causes the dizziness. Yes, this is why it's so important to try to minimize any stress. Stress always makes things worse for me!
