Hi all,

Im 4.5 stone over weight and im looking into getting a gastric band,

i may sound drastic but i have tried eveything and i cant seem to get anywhere, all i think about is food and weight it takes over my life and i have had enough,

Anyone on here had a gastric band and how has it changed things for you? are you happy you did it or do you regret it?

Thanks

Hi Sandra! Glad your op went well, how are you feeling?

My fill will be 4 weeks post op!

Depends what your dietician recommends you should eat!

For week 1 for me it was just soup, yoghurts, angel delight and fruit juice etc! Make sure you keep your protein and fibre up! I was recommended benefibre powder and you just add it to your drink and can't taste anything, I found this online! It helps with any toilet issues you may have, if you know what I mean!!!!!

Week 2 was much the same but I had mashed potato or a 1 egg omelette and similar things!

Week 3-4 is feeling more normal, shepherds pie, fish, crackers and soft cheese/pate, boiled eggs, that sort of thing!

I found the trapped wind in my chest really painful! For me it lasted 3-4 days and was very intense but it does go, just keep burping!!

      Xx

Thank you Jenni! Yes I saw a couple of ladies having their fill too and they seemed happy enough afterwards so fingers crossed!! Just don't like the idea of the needle! Nevermind!

Good luck for tomorrow! You never know you may be seen earlier!

Your be surprised how unhungry you will be, you will have nurses in and out, doctors asking you things, and you will be thinking about the op rather than your hunger!

How exciting! Just think of why you are doing this, it is so nerve wracking but as soon as it is done you wonder why you were so nervous!

Just keep on top of the pain relief afterwards but it honestly isn't a very painful op :-) xxx

Good luck today jenni67158. The op was so quick, they gave me an injection, said I would feel cold sensation in my hand , they put the mask on and I remember saying I felt light ....... The next thing I knew the nurse was rubbing my arm saying it's all done and everything went well.  X

Are you in Any pain? Remember to take the tablets regardless for the next few days!

I would say my hunger hasn't fully returned yet! I don't think about food as much! I wasn't hungry at all for at least a week!!

Shame you didn't get much sleep :-( maybe you can catch up at home! I too had the lovely electric stockings! But I was so zonked I didn't care!! Lol

Well done on your pre diet! It's definitely a sign of what's to come! Xxx

Jennie you sound great it's been 3 days for me and still suffering with the air trapped inside me.   Do you have a goal what weight ur aiming for I've not really through I'm 5 ft 4   I wonders if 10.7 stone would be ideal for me     What is your height ? X

Still some trapped air but not too bad. Bit of pain, had a suppositry yesterday and this morning. Plusdissolvable codine which i will be taking home with the injections..still waiting for pharmacy n tablets etc.  Im 5ft 2  1/2.  And aiming for  10 stone or just under..any more would be a bonus!

Tc51. I know what you mean about Op. When lay down he said 10 seconds and might get rusty taste in mouth... Dont think i went even 10 seconds. Woke up in recovery room and couldnt believe it was all over!

Have you had the dissolvable codeine before? Check you can handle the taste and are happy to take how ever many times a day.

I only say that because I had dissolvable co-codamol and it made me gag which really hurt! I then had dissolvable solpadol and that did the same! I then ended up on tiny tramadol tablets which were amazing and also helped me sleep!

I had such trouble with the dissolvable stuff but luckily I only live 5 minutes up the road from the hospital, so just make sure! I'm probably just a wimp! Xx

Yeh not the best taste in the world. Have to take a sip of the dissolved codine then a sip of water to get rid of taste

Well its day 3 or 4 now - still in pain from wounds which look bruised but neat.  when I stand up sit down.  Once settled im OK  although do get that wind pain up into left shoulder every so often.  Windeze for me I think.  just a couple of questions........ how long is it till you can drive?  do think I have found that info anywhere in my pack.  (ive an automatic car so it should be easier for me i think)

Is anyone else type 2 diabetic?  Ive only taken some of my tablets since op which Ive made smaller as they are taken with food and as ive not ate much havent wanted to take them?  Not sure what Im supposed to do.  Ive two letters to hand into GP which I will take tomorrow.  Is there anything else we should shouldnt do?  I cant close my back patio door as i havent the strength - can we iron? hoover etc? (house is doing my head in)  saying that dont think i would be able to move hoover around yet.  Think Hubby thinks Im milking it but I tell you, im deffo not!

Well I'm going out to a family event today and I will drive.  I tried to Hoover yesterday it hurt me too much.   I am defo going back monday as no one can do my job properly and I work in recruitment and want a get people into job so they have money for Xmas.  I'm sat down most of time anyway no lifting or wot like that .  It will be a meal today I'll just go for the soup and pudding ice cream  .  I'm optimistic really see I have alwYs ate pretty healthy as I studied as a nutrionist year ok some still hv good heath knowledge but since I had a snapped ligament a few year back I pulled on weigh after each op I had so it crept up to 15 st 6 and side 16 was too tight I though this is it.  I put weight on all over as well here in one place my consultant said its like I have a double layet of skin.   My bm1 was 36   I just Qaulified  mind u I did go on a few we end binges up to consultation as I wanted to put on so is qaulify. Bit naughty but hey oh I was paying private.  I won't be forcing food down as I don't want a be sick. As I'm still sore and my winds hurt. But I did pick the glue abit ops .    I lost 2lb in 4 days but you would on that diet liquid I mean.  I think u need to get to your 1st infill then your notic how gastric band really helps .

      Take is easy Jenni!

I was told I can drive when I felt comfortable and able to do an emergency stop without hurting myself! Wasn't allowed to drive within 48hours because of the general anaesthetic! But apart from that it's as soon as your comfortable. I didn't drive until at least 8/9days, purely because I didn't have to!

I also felt so weak! I couldn't even open a packet of angel delight which was so stressful!! Heheheehe! How long have you been signed off work for? I was told not to do anything strenuous like hoovering etc for atleast 2 weeks! You just need to take it easy and remember you have stitches/wounds that need to heal!

What have u been able to eat? Xxx

Hubby has ironed kids school uniforms tonight (thats a first - and probably last) yeh feel week,  hurts mainly when i first stand up or sit down.  been shuffling around everywhere.  Ive booked all next week off so i wil have been off in total 10 days before I go back to work - havent told them or anyone apart from my husband and 1 sister.  Started taking some windeze earlier which seems to have helped.  only had 1 shake today, 2 glasses of milk 1 cup of tea and 1 cup of coffee  just drinking some water. just not really hungry yet.  Ive been sleeping on 3 pillows keeping me raised in bed - dont think i move!  might try an angel delight later!

Yes keep a variety of food otherwise you will get down and fed up with it! Maybe try a soup? Something nice and warm! Keep your protein up is what my nurse said otherwise you will feel ill! Also your fibre to help with constipation if you are suffering.

Hunger didn't return for me until at least 10 days properly!

Glad you are being looked after :-)

Yes I slept propped up for a week or so aswell! Then when I finally laid on my side I sort of wedged some duvet under my tummy and it felt a lot more comfy! Couldn't do that on my left side for quite a while!!

How are you feeling about it all? X

will make some butternut squash soup tomorrow and try some!  ive just ordered some of that bene fibre i saw you mention earlier - only been for no 1 so far but as not much digested cant see me going for a while!  not spoken to any nurse - dont know who is supposed to get in touch with me - need to go chemist tomorrow to ask for a crusher and ask which of my tablets im on can be crushed and drop off 2 letters to my gp to let them know I have had the band fitted. feel a bit bewildered really, but Im sure i'll get through it x

Yes benefibre and prune juice worked for me! But it seemed to only be when I started eating properly did the symptoms relieve totally!

My consultant phoned twice and a nurse once who gave advice about diet, I must say I did feel quite on my own and wasn't really sure what I was doing! It is a complete life changer which I don't think anyone who hasn't experienced it will ever understand! I'm week 4 now and I must say I now feel confident in what I'm doing and feels like I've had the band forever!!

But if I can help in any way just let me know!

What do you do for work? Don't go back until your ready x
