Hello, I've decided I want a Gastric Band. Paying for it myself. I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. I'm reading lots of negative things about it. Can anyone who's had one tell me what life is life with it. Thank you

    Hi Katie

I've had a gastric sleeve done not a band. Heard to many stories regarding the band so decided on the sleeve best thing I've ever done! But what people have to remember is that any of these are tools to help it has been a long and hard road but I've lost 40 kilos in a year. You really need to look at your diet.

Thank you for a reply Sally. I'm trying to look at my diet. I'm doing slimming world at min but it's really slow. I have lost 8lb in 10 weeks. Only thing I think I'm worried about is not having a social life after. I've read that I won't be able to go out & eat? I still want to live a normalish life.

I just changed what I ate when I went out like I would have a kids meal size and ive also found alot of restaurants if you call before hand are brilliant with portion sizes so I didn't feel out of place when we went out! At Christmas was worse for me as we went for a meal with my company so I just ordered starters!! But then most at my work no what I have had done so are great!,

I got my gastric band fitted 15th June 2016 and since then I have lost 9 and a half stone. I'm the smallest I've been for years. Don't get me wrong I've had highs and lows with the band but a good support team does the world of good. It's a tool to loose weight and I go to a personal trainer twice a week which at beginning was hard work but now it's like second nature. If going out for dinner I order a kids meal or I order soup or a starter. Can still have a social life without going out and eating a big meal. It's a tool to a life change. It teaches you what to eat and what not to, portion control and discipline. I also had to pay private for my band but is worth every penny if used properly.

    Xx

      Hi Donna

i just read your story and wanted some advice if thats ok? I had my surgery in April this year and have found the process very slow! I lost 7lb during the first week of the surgery and have lost another 6lb since then, which i pleased with dont get me wrong but i thought i would be quicker. I totally agree with your comment on a good support team and i have that in my family but not professionals. The company I had my surgery with are not very good at after care and i feel ive kind of been left. The nurse that has completed my first infill is lovely but i dont like to keep pestering her, so thought i would try a forum! I have slowly learnt the foods that get stuck and the foods i find easier to eat such as risotto etc but is there any advice you would give on meal plans or diets to follow? I dont know if im doing something wrong or if it should be this slow? I also dont get that full feeling that i thought i would get? sorry to bombard you.. sooo many questions lol any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks x

You might be at the stage that your maybe not at the sweet spot with your band. I only manage 4 fills of 1ml before I get to the sweet spot and nearly every food is a challenge.

The key is not to eat till you feel full.

For example my breakfast would be 1 egg made into scramble, then in between I will have a snack of a fruit in custard or yoghurt maybe about 5 teaspoons, then lunch I will have homemade soup, snack in-between I'll have a smoothie, then dinner I'll have mash potatoes or mashed veg with gammon or pork or chicken and a small amount of gravy but again only a few spoon fulls. Then at night I'll just have another bit of yoghurt if still hungry.

I only drink water and drink 3 litres slowly throughout the day.

I also do a load of exercise, I walk the dog daily, go to the gym and do weight lifting, cardiovascular etc.

I can't manage to eat any of the bad foods like chocolate, crisps etc so that helps aswell.

I also invested in a Fitbit and track my calories and exercise etc.

It is slow at the beginning till you get to your sweet spot. I have a dietician that I can see with the company I got my band from. My band fill nurse is amazing, always there for support and any questions you can ask them also.

Feel free to ask me anything. Always happy to help.

I'm now nearly a year down the line and 10 Stine lighter and honestly I couldn't be happier x
