Gastric Banding Problem that might affect others

I had a gastric band fitted in October 2005 and overall it has worked well with me loosing over 8 stone. BUT, and this is a very big but, my port was located between my breasts and this has caused me great problems since I lost the fat around that area and the port was no longer cushioned.

Last week I was taken to hospital by ambulance as my port had touched my heart after moving. This caused me to have what appeared to be a heart attack. All symptoms were the same and only after the cardiologists had done various scans and tests and bloods taken did they come to the conclusion that as the port is already located very close to the heart, it had touched my heart upon moving and had caused what was both a very frightening and very painful experience. I honestly thought that my ticket was up. I am now waiting to have the band removed as I do not wish to have this happen again. I was already having trouble eating and drinking as my port seems to absorb water from somewhere in that I have had various adjustments done and within a couple of months it fills up of its own volition. So please everyone who ahs had a gastric band fitted, check out where your port is and take care of yourselves. I would hate this to happen to anyone else.

Hi can I ask what happened to all the excess skin? I heard you have to pay for the skin to be surgicaly removed. If so how much does it cost or are you stuck with folds of flabby skin?

Also if it is removed are you left with loads of scars?

Yeah the NHS does not pay to have your excess skin removed. Privately, I think it costs about £1500.

I don't think that anything done by surgery looks anything like it did originally, either.
