gastric bleeding

I cannot believe what these steroids are doing to me now! I will try to be as delicate as I can to explain my latest development. A few days ago after visiting the bathroom, I noticed, what I can only describe as a pile of coffee granules in the loo. This rung alarm bells, so I googled it and found out that as I suspected this was actually from internal bleeding somewhere. Somewhat apprehensive, I managed to book an emergency appointment with my surgery. Couldn't see my usual dr, so a tad emarassing having to explain details! Anyway he thinks it was due to my gastritis. He tested my iron levels which were not too bad for me (12). If it happens again or I start coughing up these granules I have to go straight back. Anyone else had this happen and if so, what was the outcome? I must admit I thought the dr was quite blase' about it. Hope everyone's having a 'good' day. Debbie

I have been taking coated steroids which get absorbed in the gut and so bypass the problem of stomach bleeding?

Hi ptolemy. I already take the coated version of pred. Trust me to buck the trend!

It looks like the pred cannot be blamed in this instance in that case! Are you taking the Pantoprazole long term or just for the normal eight weeks?

I read somewhere that twenty five per cent of women over forty have an hiatus hernia, I don't know how true that is. I suppose a lot of people don't know they have it. My father didn't until he had an endoscopy for something else.

Are you taking any DMARDS, ie Ibuprofen etc.?

Are your pred pills enteric coated.?

What other meds are you one, both prescribed and any over the counter ones.?

Hi Lodger. Here is a list of my current meds: 10mgs pred; Furosemide (water retention); Duloxetine (muscle and brain relaxant)!; Pantoprazole (PPI); Tramadol (Pain relief for spinal stenosis). I also have a spinal cord stimulator implant which I use 24hrs a day. Have had two previous gastroscopies which showed, stomach ulcer, gastritis, eosophagitis, hiatus hernia. My heart beat has permanently high 'p' waves.I also suffer from restless leg syndrome, carpal tunnel and osteo arthritis. Other than that I'm fine lol!

      Wow!!!

Now for another question, have you talked to a Pharmacist about contra-indications for that list of meds.

      Are you in the UK?

Hi again. No, havn't spoken to pharmacist. Good idea. Yes I am in UK. Devon to be precise. Well, there has to be some compensation!

A little off track, but - I do envy you living in Devon.  However many years ago (it must be more than 40 years) my hubby and I were visiting a relative in Devon.  Hubby has always had severe allergies and was quite unwell.  We saw step grandma's physicician.  He said hubby had some sort of tropical disease (hubby had never been to the tropics) and prescribed something that looked like pond water.  A doctor in Jersey prescribed antibiotics that saw him through the European part of our travels.  When in Dublin we saw the doctor recommended by the Canadian embassy, who said hubby had a sinus infection and he was then treated accordingly, and effectively.  So that was our experience with a Devonshire doctor - completely irrelevant I know but we always thought it rather funny (except poor hubby suffered another week until Jersey!).  I am sure your experience will be better.  biggrin

Hi Deb; yes you do have reason to be concerned, for if already told you have had a "gastric ulcer", this maybe bleeding slowly, or even somewhere down lower in your bowel???......if you feel that you could go without  your Osteo drugs (but can't see any listed), this ?may help?.....but for me, is this has happened, and happens again, would insist on having another Endoscope and Cololoscopy./CT Scan........it may not be related to any of your meds????...............Bron
