Gastritis Symptoms after H plyori treatment?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hello! I have recently been diagnosed with h plyori after getting acid reflux symptoms for 3 weeks. I just finished my triple therapy treatment after 10 days and I'm wondering if it is normal to feel burning in the stomach, nausea, and phlegm in the back of my throat. If so, how long will it take to cure? Has anyone been completely cured and eating normally again? I just need reassurance because I've been going through a hard time..

Hey shobhna9! Yes in fact I have gotten upper abdominal pain. Hm.. the doctor advised me with something similar. Two antibiotics and an acid reducer for 10 days, and he told me to take acid reducers if needed for a month because apparently it takes a month to a couple months for your stomach to heal. I've been reading forums online and I haven't actually seen anyone say that their stomach completely healed after having h plyori..

    Hi

You don't say whether you had a Breath Test following your therapy to make sure that the medication actualy eliminated the h.pylori. (It doesn't always work first time).

If you have had an all clear Breath Test - yes - it will take a few weeks for your Gastritis to heal.

Whether you will ever be clear of an over acidic Stomach is another matter.

Millions of people have h.pylori without it ever affecting them. Science has not yet come up with an answer as to why it causes so much damage to others. But there is a theory that - genetically - some people are born with more acid producing cells than others, and that it is a combination of the two which may cause the problems.

Providing you are now in the all clear, you still may need to pop the occasional antacid tablet if you experience discomfort.

In this respect keep a few Calcium Carbonate tablets to hand.

Strongly suggest you do not spend a lifetime popping PPIs such as Lanzoprazole, Omeprazole etc. They have a bad long term effect. (Though excellent for short term therapy).

    Best of luck

hello derek58875, can you tell me about more details of a breath test and when it is needed?

      Hi Shobhna

Following h.pylori therapy - which is usually a PPI (acid reducer) such as Lanzoprazole or Omeprazole plus two antibiotics - normally Amoxicillin and either Clarythromycin or Metronidazole, you need to make sure that the therapy as actually worked. Depending on where you live and particularly in Africa and the East there is resistance to some antibiotics because of their misuse. (This doesn't normally apply to Europe or the USA).

There are three possible tests to ascertain whether h.pylori has been eradicated by the antibiotics.

A blood test - which is not very accurate.

A stool test - which much more accurate but which has to be done in a laboratory.

A breath test. Very accurate (80% to 90%) and less expensive than a stool test. Simple to do. Sometimes given a special drink and then asked to blow down a tube into a small bottle.

The breath test must not be given in the first four to eight weeks after therapy. The medication therapy must be got out of the system before the breath test otherwise you may get a false 'all clear'.

Hope this is what you wanted.

      Regards

Hi Lewis. I had to have 4 separate lots of antibiotics until mine cleared up. My last lot of antibiotics were 4 in total. I can safely say I'm now H Pylori free and eating better now. Keep taking the full course and pursue if not feeling better. B

I have the same symptoms. It will take some months to heal.

As per my understanding, we can heal with our diet. I would recommend you to have yoghurt , foods that dont produce much inflammation such as broccoli. Have some medicinal spinach to heal more quickly.

Broccoli (and all steamed green vegetables), yoghurt, and probiotics are excellent dietary advice after h.pylori therapy.

Try L-glutamine to repair the stomach lining 10-40 grams max and strong probiotics to reestsblish the good bacteria!. HP destroys the stomach lining and Mucosa and the antibiotics reek havoc on your system as they are so strong, they weaken the immune system and kill off all the good and bad bacteria which will change the delicate balance of flora in the body!

Slippery Elm helps protect the stomach too.

    Good luck!

First of all you will need to find out if the therapy has actually worked.

6 to 8 weeks after therapy (you must get the antibiotics out of the system) you need a breath test to give you the all clear.

Next - it may take a couple of months watching your diet and eating sensibly - to heal your stomach Gastritis.

Finally - although you may clear your stomach of the damage that H.pylori can cause - you may always have a continuing weakness.

Much of acid reflux is caused by eventual weakness in the eosophageal sphincter together with a hiatus hernia - which more than 60% of the over 60yrs population have.

Also from an h.pylori point of view, medical science has not yet come up with the answer as to why millions of people are infected who never suffer any damage from it.

There is a theory that - genetically - some are born with more acid producing cells than others, and it is this and h.pylori that causes the damage.

So - like me - you may always need a packet of Calcium Carbonate tablets handy to deal with occasional acidity and indigestion.

Never - never - take PPIs or H2 Receptor blockers (wonderful for short term therapy) in the long term.
