General anaesthetic and low kidney function

I have just found out I have low kidney function and am due to have a shoulder operation in June. Will low kidney function have any effect on GA risks? Thanks.

    Evergreen, although those who will be treating you, including the anaesthetist, will be the best people to ask (and they should be informed anyway), for what it's worth I doubt very much that there is a risk to kidney function from GA.  I am aware, however, that there can be a risk to kidney function from certain dyes/contrasts that are used in the case of MRIs/scans.  Good luck with the op.

      Thanks. I filled out a pre op form and one of the questions was about kidney function. At the time I had had a low result but then a follow up test came back fine (or so I thought - I was wrongly informed by surgery staff and have since discovered on a trip to the GP that it was still low) so I put no problems on the form. I'll have to get that changed before the op.

    Hi,

    I had general when I had my PD catheter fitted my GFR was 9% and I will have it again when I have my ulna nerve operation and again when I have my transplant so it doesn't make any difference.  Hope this helps

    Hi,

    Everyone is at risk from anesthetic even people who have no medical history.  If you have no other health conditions and you are no overweight then you should be fine yes.
