Wonder if you will pick this up after so long?

I had pain in all my weight bearing joints (hips, kees and toes) after starting warfarin. Surgeon who did my AVR which caused AF said that I could stop warfarin after being in sinus rhythm for six months. I actually waited 11 months as the cardiologist strongly disagreed with him.

Within three weeks the joint pains stopped apart from ocasional arthritic pain in my hip.

Been off warfarin for about one month now after 10 months.  Most of my joint pain has dissipated except for right hand.   No more ice cold feet and hair loss has stopped.  Could not get haematologist or neurologist to acknowledge the link but how can so many of us be wrong.   My life is not 100% back to normal but I'm getting there.  They don't have a lot to compare me to since not many have survived.   Scary going off the warfarin since I had no warning of the clot until it happened.  Hopefully it will not happen again and was just a fluke happening and I will never have to go back on warfarin again.

Hi, I had AF for approximately 3 years and was prescribed Warfarin during my treatment. I had a Cardioversion and 2 separate Catheter Ablation operations. After my first Catheter Ablation (approximately 18 months of taking Warfarin), I started to get minor muscle cramps and pain in my right elbow. This progressively got worse and after a further 6 months I began to feel pain in both knees and suffered severe cramps in my calf muscles. I mentioned it to my Doctor (General Practitioner) and my Surgeon, who both completely dismissed the idea that my calf pain was caused by Warfarin. My Doctor suggested a course of sports massage and suggested I purchase some new shoes. My second Catheter Ablation operation was a complete success and I have now stopped taking the Warfarin. After coming off this evil drug, I noticed that my body temperature increased, I had much more energy, my libido increased, my concentration levels improved and my muscle pain began to ease. It took approximately 10 days to completely clear my system and I now feel fit and healthy again. PS I was quite upset and angry when I was experiencing the muscle pains and the medical 'experts' kept telling me that it was not related to Warfarin, but I am 100% certain that Warfarin was the cause of my severe calf pain and the Doctors did not want to prescribe alternative medicines because the alternatives are too expensive.

I was prescribed warfarin after going into AF after aortic valve surgery. I did not have calf pain but had painful hips and knees. They were painful to lay on and to walk on. Naturally the consultant said that he had not heard of that before. I continued the warfarin for about eleven months after a successful cardioversion and went back to aspirin.

My GP said that I was his third patient that week to stop warfarin.

I went back into AF after having a colonoscopy that stimulated my vagal nerve and had to resume warfarin. The joint pains were back in less than two weeks. I had another cardioversion in March and stopped warfarin three months later and the joint pains went.

Because of my heart valve the newer anticoagulants are contra indicated.

My husband has the same problems...plus his hair has fallen out. Gp isn't interested and he doesn't have a heamotologist ask. We bought a coagucheck machine and keep the INR level and the lowest he's supposed to be on...that way it doesn't seem so bad.

I have only just discovered this site and hope someone may still be looking at it as am very encouraged by reading all the replies to this message, because I have also suffered all the symptoms described, tiredness, joint pain, pain at night etc. When I asked my Doctor about this, it was dismissed as a side effect of the osteoarthritis in my right hip, for which I cannot have a replacement because statistically I only have a 48% chance of surviving, so just "get on with it". I have been taking Warfarin for 4 years now for Atrial Fibrillation, but I now have a new problem. I have a cataract in my right eye which is reaching the stage of needing treatment, and my questions about this have had non-commital answers. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? Anne Induni

Ihave taken Warfarin since 12/12/1975, over 40 years for thromboembolic disease.  I have osteoarthritis from my neck down.  I understand previous comments about the problems associated with taking Warfarin, but cannot say that the drug itself causes joint pain.  I have recently seen a doctor who tells me I have chronic bilateral degenerative osreoarthritis in my shoulders, but this also applies to my hips and knees.  I have have 6 operations on my hands, my spine is affected and it seems every other joint from neck to toes.  I have been told in the past I have to live with it, as operations are too risky because of the risk of clots (of which I have had over 40)  I have already lost 2.5 inches in height.  There is very little in the way of pain relief because most interfere with Warfarin.  I am not complaining, I know now I just have to accept, and live it day by day, doing what I can manage.  I cannot dress myself, but luckily I have a fantastic husband, married almost 53 years.  I think all the advice I can give it "accept it, and take it a day at a time"  I am on Warfarin for life, so there is no end in sight, so what else can one do?
